I was getting tired last night so I didn't finish posting all the slabs I got at Ms. Marie's sale. I will try not to duplicate. Binghamite Devils Toenail? soft colored jasper. Big slab for 25 cents! Have no idea what this is. Another 25cent slab Group shot. Can't remember what the one in the center with green is. The name is right there but out of my reach and it is driving me crazy! Closer shot Nice flowers in this one Owyhee and ? agate This is the most expensive piece I bought. It was $15 and it says Hawkseye pietersite from South Africa? I always thought it came from Russia Small pieces of rhodocrosite and Austrailian jasper rock small Rutilated Quartz stone and a green stone? more 4 for $1 Polkadot Agate and I am not sure what the little one on the left is. Looks kind of pink inside Got a couple Owyhee's with the red markings in them Rhodocrosite The name of this one is escaping me right now but I think it is from Canada I know that is not all but I think you get the idea. I really got a lot of great stuff and it is taking me a while to just go through it all! If you know what any of it is, please let me know. Fran

Oh man Fran....Those are some reallynice slabs. I tried to search the name for that green rock as well. It's on the tip of my tongue, it comes from Australia and it's like a whole bunch of tiny geodes in the matrix. Someone Help...it's driving me crazy too! The little red/pink unknown one looks like it could possibly be Texas Springs Pink limbcast. Get Busy Cabbing!!! Steve

Nice collection of slabs, Fran - you'll have lots of fun with those! By the way, the one 5th from last that's labelled Owyhee with red - to me, that looks a lot like either mookaite or noreena jasper. The 4th one down - the unknown $.25 cent one - I don't know what it is, either, but I'm in the process of slabbing a big chunk that looks just like it - but every slab so far breaks up into 3 or 4 pieces before I can even clean it out of the saw. That's why I'm thinking it's some kind of pet wood. Sure is purty, though.

That Binghamite slab should have been the most expensive one. If you got it for less than $15, you got a steal! It's been practically unavailable for years. There is one location open to collecting, once a year, through a rock club and I don't think anybody has pulled out a rock that size for a very long time. Better quality slabs go for $100 and up (depending on size and colors).
Congrats on the whole haul!

That pietersite is from Namibia ( formerly called Southwest Africa ). Sid Pieters discovered this form of tigereye on some farms in Namibia. Sid ran a rockshop in Windhoek, Namibia and even though he has passed on , this rockshop is still open. I was there again this past January and just happened to take a picture , because I gave a miner a t-shirt and he literally followed me around for hundreds of miles. I looked up and there was Tobias! the top photo labeled binghamite has what I believe to be pietersite as the lower slab........

The slab labeled Binghamite is definitely Binghamite, but Binghamite and Pietersite are similar. Binghamite was only found in the iron mines around Cayuna, MN (which is why it is sometimes called Cayunite). Silkstone came from the same mines and is closely related to Binghamite; in fact, it looks like the golden area in the upper left corner of the Binghamite slab is Silkstone. (Silkstone is a golden jasper mixed with hematite, whereas Binghamite can also have red, blue, green jasper along with the golden jasper and hematite. Both may have white quartz, although that's less desirable. All forms are chatoyant.)

Everyone, thank you so much for the information! I really appreciate it! I feel so cheap now but the binghamite was a 50 cent slab. Since she had collected it years and years ago, that is all she priced it at. The Peitersite she had bought years ago so she sold it for her price. I know that I have seen it much higher and it is a really great slab in person! Fran

What a great series of slabs, frane...and thanks to all who have contributed to the discussion. It certainly helps those of us who are struggling to learn IDs.
To digforcrystals. I have some of this supposedly "South Africa pietersite" too -- I am glad to know the real story. Namibia AKA "southwest Africa" makes sense. Seems like some of the material got involved in a game of telephone on its travels to America.

I have no idea what Ms. Marie's rock sale is but you really cleaned up. I see a slew of great cabs in your future.
