The Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona is a treat for rock nuts. First, a word to the wise, leave your rock containers at home. At the front gate, they ask if you have any rocks with you and will ask to inspect them and will mark them if you do, so as not to confuse any rangers you might run into while visiting. The Rangers are eagle-eyed for anyone picking up souvenirs so don't even think about it. (they inspect you leaving too) In fact, the biggest deterrent is this display: Here are some letters from former visitors. They had a whole book of these letters! I thought this was pretty cool. A map of states and the Pet Wood found in each. Close up. And some of the trees that they came from... Check out the cut and polish time on these... Okay, the wood... I know it's not what you expected. Not like standing trees magically turned to stone, but it sure is neat to walk and see all the different colors and forms of it. There was once much more, but the area was heavily hounded before becoming a national park, hence the cut stumps. Pet Wood skree Agatized tree bridge Petrified Forest NP is on the southeast edge of the Painted Desert. Half the park is Petrified Forest and half is the Painted Desert. I'll show the Painted Desert in another thread. And now... the video... (had to chuckle to myself when I realized I was setting Pet Wood to music, LOL) Enjoy! Thanks for the company! JO

[shakes head] Na ah, no way! I'm not tempting the curse or pet wood gremlins or whatever, not no how, not no way! LOL.
Greg, they were selling it at the campground we stayed at for $1-$2 per pound. They were really generous with their guestimation of weight too. I got four fist sized rainbow wood pieces for $2.
I heard the same about the collecting spots. I saw many, and I mean many, places to buy it, all around wherever you look. I did read the signs to try to see if they were offering hounding. Maybe someone here knows about the legal hounding spots.

Thank you for taking us along with you, so nice to see again such a marbelous place!
I agree, I haven't seen anywhere else rangers as vigilent as here, they look like guarding diamonds. Anyway, with so many rock shops with decent prices around, it would be a nonsense to risk.

Wow, nice place. We also have a petrified forest here in Utah, called Escalante Petrified Forest, but it is a lot smaller...but the wood is just as beautiful.

Wonderful trip. I could just see me buying box after box from the local places. My mom went there as a kid and someone got busted trying to steal some from the park. Pretty hefty fine from what she was saying. It was funny as at the time they were selling it just out side the park for 10 cents a pound!
