That's good to know. I may have to ship my tent, sleeping bag, etc. One more thing: don't drive with your headlights on during the day. You become a Ranger magnet. Chuck There is most definitely a check point 1 mile north of woodward ranch. Expect them to want your back windows rolled down and they will ask where are you headed and where you have been. I have passed thru it more times than I care to think about. I think the legal speed on 118 is 70 and might even be 80. Just to play it safe I run 80. If your goin' slow they might want to know why! As a side note, I followed Teri to her needle peak spot at Terlingua / Big Bend and I dont think we ever went under 80 , ever. 'Never been stopped out that way and I have flown by plenty of the border patrol vehicles. I have talked to lots of the border patrol folks in town at the restaurants and gas stations. They are decent people and much friendlier than the law enforcement folks out this way. Texas is odd in that if you overtake a car the person in front of you usually pulls over in the emergency lane for you to pass. Very courteous , but on the flip side , trucks pulling cattle trailers just pull right out into the emergency lane to get going instead of waiting for on coming traffic to clear. This seems to be pretty unique to South Texas as i have never observed that anywhere else.

Never been to East Texas, huh? Curt Not sure I follow you , Curt. I have spent my far share of time in East texas. I did get stopped for speeding and got a warning from a very polite trooper on I-20 about half-way from the border of Louisiana to Dallas. I also got a ticket in Ozona for no seat belt ( not used to wearing them as Georgia until recently didnt require pick-up truck drivers to wear them). But the area around alpine on them back rural roads hardly can be compared to say , heading into Dallas on an interstate or a town like Ozona on an interstate exit. The speed limit does go up from 70 to 80 once you get a bit West of Dallas.

Sorry, I was refering to the pulling off and letting people pass. Rual areas in East Texas still do that. Though not as much as they once did. Some stupid law about not doing it now.

Heard back from Stillwell:
"have about 6 tent sites with e/w....
e/w is $17.00 a night for 2 people...if you stay a week you get one day free...."
I called today to make a reservation. They said they don't take reservations for spring break. So I asked "not even for the tent sites with electric?" She said "No. We have plenty of them. We've never run out."
So I'm scratching my head... They have about 6 sites and they've never run out? Even during spring break?... What am I missing?
Later, jeri

If all goes according to plan, my son and I will be there to hound Sunday and Monday, drive to Dallas Tuesday, drive back to Alpine Thursday, and hound Friday and Saturday before heading back to Dallas and home on Sunday. We'll be flying into Dallas, so we'll probably stay in Alpine because I can't manage the logistics of getting our camping gear down there in a couple of suitcases.
Looking forward to it!

Chuck... Looking forward to meeting you and your son!
Spike and I plan to arrive at WWR on the 12th (Sat). Spend the night there, go hounding on Sun. and then head to Stillwell. We'll be staying at Stillwell the 13th through the 16th and leave on the 17th. Kinda hate to leave early, but need to spend a couple of days with a friend on the way home.
Later, jeri

I've been to Stillwell too. They have a "bunk house" to rent also (a crappy old trailer) that sleeps at least 6. The $150 trips to Walker are for three days with dry camping and no per lb. charge. I'll have to consider a couple of days on the way to San Antone show.

So maybe we'll do WWR on Sunday, Stillwell Monday and 1/2 day Tuesday. Maybe I can arrange a trip with Teri for Friday.

Ken, there isn't a lot between the two. There's a Motel 6 in Abilene half a mile east of where 277 meets I 20 easy on and off. Will send a pm in just a bit also.

Well, I'm out. My meetings go from 4pm Tuesday to 5pm Thursday. That leaves me only 2 days of hounding with 4 days of driving between Dallas and Alpine (2 round trips). On top of that, my 14 yr old son broke his arm snow boarding. It's a little hard to hound with one good arm. Oh well, maybe next year (if the gang decides to go). Chuck
