Our stapelia produced a single flower this year and I noticed this morning that it had opened. This is a cactus-like plant with a strange hairy and somewhat stinky star shaped bloom Close up the maze like pattern reminds me of dino bone cell structure

*L* I used to collect a few Stapeliads before I knew they smelled like dead meat when they bloomed and were blow fly pollinated. I made the mistake of leaving a door open while they were blooming and filled the room with flies. Last time I made that mistake *L* but the flowers are really something, some almost a foot across....Mel

Amazing flower! Is it carnivor/insectivor?

That is a stunning flower. Don't think I'd want it in the house but it is so pretty.

Todd they bloom once a year. Last year we had 4 or 5 smaller blooms, this year just 1 large bloom. Not too bad stink wise being outside, but I sure wouldn't want it in the house lol. Adrian it's not a carnivore, but as Mel said it's sent is geared up specifically to attract flies for pollination. Strange but beautiful

That is a really neat flower. I take it the plant is a succulent. Are the petals thin like a true flower or more fleshy?

Tony the flowers are fleshy rather than thin. Donnie that's definitely the same type we got! I spoke too quick saying it was a single bloom this year, as more buds have popped up this past week
