G'morning all! Been a member for a while, but just finally getting around to being active (soooo much good stuff on here, taking a while to get thru all of it). Anyway, I was curious if there was a way to find folks on the board that are "close" to one area or another? I have looked around a bit, but didn't find anything, so thought I would ask.
Recently moved to the Glendale AZ area from good ol' Kansas City. While back there, I was doing a fair amount of custom stained glass and stone work, mostly large stuff like table tops and book ends, but I had started to make the change over to smaller lapidary. Long story short, I wound up moving 2 or 3 thousand pounds of rough I had accumulated from MO to AZ, and now trying to get the work back up and running. Funny (sad?) sidebar, I bought a BUNCH of stuff from a guy up in Congress AZ, had it shipped to MO (before I knew the move was in my plans), and then hauled the rocks back to their old stomping grounds. Good thing they don't check the mileage on rocks...
Anyway, just wanted to see who was in the Phoenix area, as always looking to meet up with fellow rock nuts...
Take care, Rodney

Welcome aboard Rodney. Don't feel bad about hauling your rocks half way across the country. I did the same a few years back, as have several other members. There are a few members from Arizona on here. If you ever want to head north to South Dakota, a couple of us can show you some of the best rockhounding in the country. Don

Welcome to the forum. When my father died my mom planned to sell the place. We hauled tons of rock home. When we sold our house and "retired" we had to rent one U-haul just to haul all the rock back where it came from. My father moved it all here from the house he sold about an hour from where my house was. So, I get it. Traveling rocks. You will have to come visit us in Mesa in February at the Apache Junction show. Stonesthatrock are there also. Some of the members do Quartzite in January too.

> Jakesrocks I actually bought a bunch of the large rough (100# plus, even a 200#plus pound rose quartz boulder) from a guy up near Custer, South Dakota, drove up there with a trailer, came back with 3 full pallets! Some gorgeous blue and orange feldspar, amphibolite, etc. He and his parents had a rock shop, will have to dig through the old emails and see if I can find his info, you might know him. On the trip back to MO, I had to drive past pile after pile of "prairie" agates alongside the interstate from their recent work...but...I literally only had room for a couple of them!
Thanks all for the replys, look forward to meeting you at the area shows etc...

If you were still in the grasslands of S.D, / N.W. Nebraska, those piles of prairie agates may have contained a few of the much sought after Fairburn agates. You should have spent a day digging through them. One really nice Fairburn might have paid for the whole trip. I've seen some that would easily fit in the palm of your hand sell for thousands of dollars.
