Thought you all might get a kick out of what a guy at a jobsite asked me when he heard me talking about looking for rocks.
He said, "why would anyone want to pick up and keep rocks?"
Well, that took me by surprise so I just replied, "why not?" followed by "because they are beautiful and each one is unique with no two being the same".
He wasn't satisfied with my answer so asked me what I do with them. I told him I look at them...duh...LOL.
He just looked at me and shook his head. Oh well, guess non-rockhounds will never understand us.

If he is married, ask him if his wife has a diamond ring. If he says yes, ask him why a diamond?

Why do people wander about rocks, when there are so many other hobbies which involve collecting items as least as useless as rocks: stamps, matchboxes, old bottles and so on!

free4rms, that's what I usually say when a woman asks me "why". I ask her if she has a diamond ring or birthstone ring. She always says yes, then I say "so you do like rocks"...lol.
From men I sometimes get a laugh and "what are you looking for, diamonds?" To which I respond that there are diamonds in the area and that I find garnets all the time.
Rockhounding is one of those things you either get it, or you don't get it.

intresting to think about if everone took rocks then there would be none. Hummm does that mean we would live in a greaaat big hole???

usually when i tell people .I make jewerly out of them . they say okay and never mention it again .. lol there is those few rare souls who carry the conversation for another 5- 15 minutes .Usually those people are the smarter ones !

Never thought to ask if his wife had a diamond, have to remember that for next time. He didn't seem like the kind of guy who would collect anything but dust...lol. Oh well, at least I know you all understand the addiction..:-)

When people ask I often show them cabs and polished rocks I keep in the car. Most of the time it leads to them wanting to see more and asking how to find good rocks. The few that still don't get it...oh well.
