my raytech vibe directions were to wash and recharge the 120 grit every 24 hours, with a recharge only at 12 hrs. if im doing like 10-12 days in rough that is a LOT of grit. you guys concur with needing to do this so often?

I don't have any experience with Raytechs, but here are my thoughts as a vibe user: 1. Grit breaks down in about 24 hrs in a vibe, but that doesn't mean you need to recharge. It just gives a finer sanding. I wash and change grits at 48 hrs. I don't recharge a single grit.
2. 10-12 days in rough is a _long_ time in a vibe. I use a rotary for shaping, then switch to the vibe for sanding and polishing. If you're starting with rough rocks in the vibe, then maybe 10-12 days is right, but it still seems long to me.
3. Depending on your vibe, you may not need as much grit as directed. Several vibe users put in a fraction (1/4 to 1/2) of the mfrs. directions.

If you are rounding pebbles you would be better off buying a small rotary. Use 60/90 followed by 120/220. Then use your vibe for 500F and polish.

I would say the same many people use a rotary for the first grind for two reasons 1 - get a nicer shape 2 - and build up a stock of rocks for the vibe to make up full loads

You should consider the need for recharge against two criteria: 1) so much mud/creme that the rocks are cushioned and no longer grinding, 2) visible course grit left in the bottom of a container after you flush out all the mud. If you see unused grit, close to the original size, and you did not have too much/thick mud, then you might be able to go 36 hours.

As long as the rocks continue to move, I recharge after 48 hours.

thanks guys. sticking with the vibe for now due to lack of patience for the rotary and that i like the odd shaped final rocks.
