Hey all you doppers, I was in Micheal's Craft store the other day and came across this handy little product. It's made to melt glue sticks but it's great for melting dop wax also. The best part is it only cost $8.49. I was looking at the dop pots being sold at my local rock shop and they were about the same size and cost $24.95. Ed

Well that then begs the question, can you use hot glue in place of dop wax? what might be the drawbacks? if any....

Stoner, do you know if it melts too hot or just right? I was planning in investing in a coffee warmer with tin can set up and this may be much better although probably more expensive over this side but still worth it

I use hot wax to mount small rock to blocks and clamp them in my 10" saw when I use hot wax to dop I have noticed that I need to use a larger dop especially if the mounting side is very smooth. sometimes I put too much pressure on the rock against the wheel

Hey Tweetie. I was using a coffee warmer type thing but I like this much better. I just used it for the first time and it worked great. The little hump in the middle is cool cuz I put the wax on one side and I can heat the stone on the other side. Rally, I've never had much luck using hot melt glue on anything!

Stoner, does the wax stay on one side or does it flow to the other side?

Ooh, that's even cheap enough for me. If I use the 40% off coupon that comes in the newspaper each Sunday it'll be real cheap! Thanx Ed.

Stoner, DUDE! Sweet find. It's always amazing how much cheaper something is when it isn't designed for your intended use but does the job. So, have you used that thing for melting dop wax? Don't forget I just picked up that box & I've been thinking about cabbing alot ever since. I can use a cheap grinder for now, I already have all the other materials & then use the tumbler to polish them. I just don't know how to do the dopping part properly. Hopefully I will gain some insight at the rock & gem show here in a few days... Oh ya tweet, try calling the actual store to find out if they have it but sometimes the employees are incompetant or just don't care enough to "actually" check. Next time i'm in the area of our Michaels I will stop in & look for myself.

That's really cool, but I'd think it would be much easier to use the glue gun. I can see how it would be handy for the dop glue though. Neat find Stoner, lets see, you found it in CA so it might show up in MN a couple years from now. ;D

Tweety, call your local Michaels store. I called mine, they checked and they have it for $7.99! Sorry Ed, they said you pay more in California.

Yea Cher, but it will probably cost $5.99 where you are. Tweetie, I only melted enough wax so it won't cross over the ridge. LCARS, it works great. Do a search for "dop wax" and you'll get more info than you need.
