I got this agate form theGemSHop in June when Sara (moondragon) and I went up for a visit. I had previously seen this particular banded and lacy pattern offered as Madagascar agate, but it was clearly in a drum of Moroccan agate they had just imported. Whatever, I like the pattern. I will cut some as is, and I will treat some with sugar and acid to make sardonix. This has better pink and overall better contrast, so I will see how well it works AS IS. But it can look overall gray and too subtle when a small part of the pattern is cut in a cab, and I do like the sardonix effect - so I need to move carefully and make the best choices. (see example on left I made last Summer) The grayish look to the white parts is very surface. As soon as I begin to grind, the whites really come back.

Those are beautiful stones. I like the sardonix effect but I really do love the colors in the original stone. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Nice looking slabs, even without the 'enhancement'.

Either way, as is or treated, these are bound to be amazing slabs! I love them just the way you have them pictured here! Fran

Keep in mind the other 20lbs I got did look like Moroccan. Not like this. For this look you want Madagascar.
But, yes, it can be a fun place.

"Sard" used to refer to any brown tone agate (more brown than carnelian). Sardonyx would be onyx in browns.
