:help: I have a 7 1/2" loretone saw . Can any one tell me why I am getting arch like saw mark on my cuts?? Am I pushing too much or may be a dull blade ?? Also I was cutting a Brazilian agate and there were sparks. Might i be low on oil? The tip of the blade is in oil. Thanks , Nancy

Brazilian is tough stuff...if you are seeing sparks, you are pushing too hard more than likely...if you are getting oil spray, you should be good on blade coolant...you may want to dress the blade to expose more diamond...lot of us use obsidian cuts to do the dressing of a blade.

Do you have a vise on that saw ? If not, you're probably not pushing with an equal amount of pressure with both hands. That will cause the blade to try to travel in its groove. That will cause those marks. Hand held rocks almost always have some saw marks in them. Make sure you have oil about 1/2" up the side of your blade, and make sure the drain holes on your saw table are clear, so the oil can drain back down around the blade.

I'm assuming you mean an 8" lapidary blade? If you are hand feeding with a vise only use enough pressure to advance rock as blade grinds through. If you are holding by hand you likely will have some saw marks. Make sure blade is dressed by cutting a piece of something abrasive (dressing stick, fire brick, old SC grinding wheel, etc.). Brazilian is tough agate.

You can get a fire brick at Home Depot for less than $2. I had to dress my blade multiple times when cutting a Brazilian agate.

Thanks for your quick response !!! Sounds like I'm pushing too hard , I do not use the vise that came with it, I just cann't get a good grip on the rock with it. Of course I had to choose something super hard. Also I will try the dress the blade , Didn't know . Thanks again

If you're not using the vise, be very careful feeding the rock to the blade. By using too much pressure on one side or the other, it's awfully easy to dish or warp those smaller blades. Let the blade do the work. You won't speed up the process by pushing on the rock, and you might just ruin a blade.

Learn to use the vise using wedges. Someone posted a how to recently. You will get much more uniform slabs also.
