Hi all! I'm getting into this sort of roundabout, but I need some help. I have a 9 yr old DD that is becoming fascinated with rocks. There is a pile of rocks left by the former owner of the place and she's starting there. She wants to identify them all, naturally. I, however, am a rock dunce! I think we've tenatively identified a couple so far. So, any good ideas for how to start out? We have a couple basic rock books for kids. Better yet, is there anybody in the south central Montana area that wouldn't mind mentoring or just getting together once with us to get us started? Thanks all!

Welcome to you and your daughter. Where in Montana do you live ? I have a good rockhound friend in Billings, who would probably be willing to help out. I'd be happy to help, but I'm clear over on the east side of South Dakota. Don

We're actually just a little north of Billings. If your friend would be willing, we would greatly appreciate it! If not, that's ok too. We'll just keep on working at it. I feel like I don't even know enough to ask intelligent questions yet.

Check the members section, and contact montanamadman. He's a heck of a nice guy, with a heart of gold. If you manage to meet up with him, don't let him scare you. He's a heavy haul trucker, and a little rough around the edges, but like I say, a heck of a nice guy. Don

I feel like I don't even know enough to ask intelligent questions yet. Don't worry about the questions. I was taught many years ago that the only dumb question, was the one that went unasked. The folks on here are friendly, and always happy to answer questions.

If you are close enough join the Billings club. Local clubs are best way to really enjoy the hobby. Typically a lot of old timers willing to share knowledge, field trips, and classes. Also, can be a terrific source of good used equipment. Welcome to the forum.

thermopkt, I am so glad that Jakesrocks put you in touch with Montanamadman. He has so much knowledge about stones and as a trucker he has collected all over the country. He has his own mountain of rock in his backyard. Enjoy your visits with him and I know you will learn much. He'll be a great teacher. Wish I could sit in. Welcome about the RTH!!!

Thanks all! We met montanamadman today and had a great time! DD is at the moment spreading all the rocks he gave her on the floor and seeing what all she can remember about what he told her. She's doing much better than I thought she would. We learned a ton!
Thanks again, Bob!
