Anybody know a good place to take a short field trip to go rock hounding in the central/southern end of North Carolina? I'm just north of Charlotte, which puts me about 36 miles north of the South Carolina border, so maybe anything on the northern end of South Carolina? No where near the beaches. I'm about 2 hours from Asheville so the part of the Mountains near I-40 is only a stone's throw away (oh I'm just too funny). So say a two hour circle from Mooresville, NC?? I've marked a map from Google with A for where my house is. The unshaded area inside the orange circle is about my limit for driving for a short field trip. Any suggestions for areas within that circle?

Hey Robin, I'm hanging out pretty close to you in Dillon, SC til Thanksgiving then heading for Greensboro for the holiday.
Been doing a little research on hounding spots. Haven't gotten to checking them out seriously as I've just been getting organized and caught up on projects. Here are just a few (no clue if they are in the above area though).
Cotton Patch Mine- New London, NC Diamond Hill- Antreville, SC Crabtree Emerald Mine- Mitchell Co, NC Lake Chatuge- Clay Co, NC Sheepcliff Aquamarine Mine- Jackson Co, NC

Robin you are in the middle of collectors heaven Franklin is the gem capital of the world so they say lol. I have been to the Diamond hill mine found many nice crystals one amy. as big as a fist its solid purple its mostly facet grade. Our very own Kap was in charge on that dig. Go to dirtyrockhounds.com then click on M.A.G.M.A look for Field trip reports you'll find everything you need there. here is link to DRH. dirtyrockhounds.proboards.com/index.cgi?George

My favorite is Crabtree Emerald mine at Spruce Pine. Next would be diamond Hill crystal mine. Guaranteed to find crystals. Next would be the Cotton Patch gold mine at New London, just outside of Ashboro. Then the gold mines just below Marion. (gold is over $1200) Ken P.S. kap(Keith) told me he just found a vein with large plates of skeletal crystals at diamond Hill.

Thanks all! NatureNut if I can get something together I'll drop you a line. I'm going to look into all these.
As to MAGMA, well my experience with them was, to put it PC, less than stellar. The one dig I went on with them was a complete let-down, and I'm not going to get into it here, too many members here who like Magma. Anyway, I wish them the best but I stay away from that bunch.

Does anyone know a good rockhounding place around Bandon Oregon. I will be in that area for four days. I have gone to Bullard's Beach and found some nice fossils and Petrified wood but would love to find some other places. As I have only been to Oregon twice detailed directions would be great. Kind Regards, Janet

Dont think everyone here is a big fan of magma ! That's not the case at all. I wish them the best and all that , too !
