Welcome aboard. What ever you decide to buy, don't get a department store tumbler, or one from Harbor Freight. They're junk. Be sure to order an extra belt for your tumbler, and an extra lid gasket wouldn't hurt to have around. I prefer the Thumlers tumblers myself. It's easier to change belts on them, and they're a reliable machine. With the Lortone machines you have to remove a cover and loosen the motor mount screws to change belts.

Start with a Thumler AR-2 with two 3-lb barrels. Get a few extra barrels. Preferably, a barrel for each stage. Minimally, a dedicated polish barrel. These machines are reliable and easy to find parts for should you ever need one. Mine hasn`t stopped running in two years.
Thumler`s thermal shutdown will give you peace of mind. If the barrels ever jam, the motor will themally shut down before it burns out, or starts a fire. I have tested this feature twice now. Simply cool it down and start it running again.
If you get addiced and buy a larger rotary, or a vibratory tumbler, the AR-2 will still be useful. I use mine for specialty small batch loads, or to prepare rocks for my vibratory.
Darryl.

First of all welcome to the forum ...Secondof all, Well I use to have a lortone.... and I have a friend that has a thumbler... Well I no longer own a lortone and the thumbler.... its not running . Before you buy either of the two above go look at this web site www.mjrtumblers.com This is all they make tumblers only. This tumbler has ball bearings not bushings and has a V-belt not a little round O-ring belt. You can get it in a 15lb or 35lb has a two year warranty And if it breaks they will send you the parts right away to fix it with or they will fix it for you if you want to send it back. The guys name is Matt and he is a nice guy so go check it out before you buy. Good luck, Mark

Great tumblers Mark! My only question/concern is how much noise do the barrels make when tumbling? I can't find any info there on how they make the barrels, but I really like that 15p starter kit and may well buy one....

Welcome! Not sure what your looking for in your poll? just the machine vs a kit? They use PVC pipe and end caps for the barrels. The 33b is nice with the dual barrels as you load both with rough on the first try, after a month, separate the stuff that can move on the to second phase and leave the rest in the fist barrel. Don't forget to check with John @ www.jsgemslapidary.com/ he's one of our member / peddlers ;D that will treat you right. Dr Joe .
