The first looks like a Serpentine that I've collected in SE PA. The second looks like a blue quartz with iron and possibly pyrite. The blue could be the tint of the pic though. Is it more gray than the pic? Jo

Ken Ok , The green rock is hardness 6 1/2 .glass does not scratch it ,it does scratch the glass . Quartz does scratch it . The other rock is quartz, quartz crystal does not scratch it . As far as the iron stains , this is cut and the pattern goes clear through the rock and is the same hardness . I am thinking fine , granular epidote now on the green rock , the hardness is right on for it and colors too .

Is it more gray than the pic? Jo I was refering to the glaciation, as to where it was from, and the size it was before being ground down by the glacier . I found both these rocks in east central Illinois . The first rock is too hard for serpentine, now that i have tested it , at 6 1/2 . I did notice after you said pyrite that there is some metallic sparkles throughout it . I think this may be mica , is`nt that what makes aventurine quartz? is the mica in the quartz ? Thanks for the reply . Ted
