Finally! I thought of a competition to let me share a bit--so many have shared with me! I am learning to make cabocons--and with the help of JohnJSGems just upgraded a bit. The cabs below just did 3000 grit, no further polishing yet, although I noticed one or two had a bit of water left on them from washing them. The rules: 1. The first person to idenitfy five or more cabs wins. 2. I will discuss the prize with the winner(s) at the end and he/she/they may choose between rough and misc. slabs. Medium flat rate on rough, small flat rate on slabs. I haven't chosen the slabs, but I will send some favorites. Rough I won't disclose. 3. You may make negative comments about my cabbing skills or about my photography skills, but not both, not even in different posts. Be kind, I'm just learning! 4. I will give clues if needed. 5. Certain of you who know me will know instantly what these cabs are made of--please don't play, but please DO send me ideas for clues. I hope you enjoy! MYSTERY CAB 1: MYSTERY CAB 2: MYSTERY CAB 3: MYSTERY CAB 4: MYSTERY CAB 5: MYSTERY CAB 6: MYSTERY CAB 7: MYSTERY CAB 8: MYSTERY CAB 9: This one broke and I glued it back together--not a very good job, I see:

Well, Tandl, I must give you credit for guessing all of them. With the exception of cab #3, they are all common opal, and I think (although I am not certain) that they began their solid mineral life taking over wood. Most of the opal I see in this area, when in large chunks, forms in clear rings. Cab #3 is a mystery to me as well--the "gold" parts are the jelly opal that I am used to working, but the white area is very light weight, brittle, and soft. I was actually very surprised to be able to cut it, and the shine will be minimal. It is rather reminiscent of the texture of the inside of a bone, next to the marrow. So, Tandl, you are a tough one. The last time we spoke you were only interested in limb casts--which I likely could find for you but I am too much of a wimp to do so in single digit weather through the snow. I have a few nice pieces I have kept for display--would be happy to send one of those. How's this? The colors are better than they appear--inside photo since the weather remains lousy. The quarter is balanced on the rock for size; my guess is it weighs 5-7 lbs. Or this--this one is wet because I just dug it out of the snow--the lines aren't as clear as the first one but it has better colors: If you are tumbling now or anything else, pm me--I've got lots of slabs and tumble mix and we'll find something you like!
