These are a combination of picture jasper and some type of petrified wood from Saddle Mountain. This area is known for opalized wood, but these are tougher than opals--probably bits of both jasper and agate. The larger pieces are very gnarled--like twisted roots. First, some of the rough. There is some blue in the largest piece--hmmm, maybe thirty miles from Ellensberg as the gander flies!
The whole batch:
Some small "group" shots to show the variety. The white stuff that looks like dried polish is actually white parts on the rock. There are also a few healed fractures.
What a dream tumble! This stuff did not crack, chip, spall or any other evil thing, and it took a great polish. I almost left it at Saddle Mountain, but it was a "slow" collecting day. Now I wish I had gotten more!
