How loud are the Lortone tumbler with wet tumbling as compared to the tow tumbler?

I'm thinking it may depend on what kind of 'toy tumbler' you are talking about. It most likely means the difference between a hard plastic barrel and a thick rubber barrel. I had a 'Science Tech' tumbler that did a fine job for me, and it was REAL noisey compared to Thimblers, and especially the Lortone. The 'Science Tech' finally died because the grit ate through the inside of the barrel and created a leak.

Mine is a Natural Science Industries model toy tumbler, I paid $33.00 for it. I spent another $15.00 to get 4 more barrels, so I don't have to risk mixing.

I started with the one in the picture above. It was incredibly loud. We couldn't believe the difference when I bought the Lortone - my wife was impressed. The toy model needed it's own background. The Lortone is out in the open and just makes a mild background noise.
Plus, on the second round of tumbling, the rubber washer that turns the tumbler gave out and lid would no longer stay sealed.

that's the little one i have whining in the corner. every now and again i unplug it just to hear the difference without it. it has run non-stop since 12/26/03. i almost sent it to retirement this weekend but the rock addiction gets the better of me and i loaded it up and kept it whining. the lortone's put it to shame. but you get what you pay for. kim

Yes that is the one that I have. I am luck my dad has a shop in the basement and you can barely hear it upstairs if the door to the shop is closed. When I go to cut my jump rings with a Jewelers saw I put headphones on and listen to the local radio station which drowns out the sound of the tumbler. I will be going to my rock shop this weekend to see if they carry the lortone tumblers and see if their prices are any different than over the internet. I am also going to look at their rocks. Like I need anymore rocks. However, my toy won't go to the trash or to Good will, I just might give it to my nephew who likes rocks as well.

As for the problem with the lid not staying sealed, I used the teflon thread tape to seal my tumbler, I didn't do that on the first run of my second batch and wound up with grit all over the base of the tumbler. I had to recharge it, and that is when I found my dad's thread tape in his shop.
If the Lortone is a quiet as you all say it is then I have a better place to put it than in my dad's shop.
Another question, those of you that have the 3 # Lortone tumbler, did you notice a big jump in your electric bill?

I'll double check on this but from what i know my lortone 33b cost me about 12 cents a day to run. it has a rating of 36 watts "most of the light bulbs in my house are 100 to 150 watts"

this is how i got them numbers 36 watts times 24 hours in a day divided by 1000 times .15 which is what i'am charged from the electric company per 1000 watts. if your motor is in horse power say 1/3 hp your watts would be 746 divided by 3. 746 watts is one hp

I always forget the model numbers; these are the ones I've got in the order I got them:
Lortone 3 lb. single barrel Raytech vibe -- 5 lbs. I think or 4.5 Lortone 1.5 lb. triple barrel The new one is a Lortone 2 barrel -- 3 lb. each
How could I resist? Rock Shed's price is $85. Then they discount other products. I got 10 lbs of rough and some polish and with the shipping and everything it ended up to be about $132. Of course, getting the shiny stones out at the end is PRICELESS!
