Does a vibratory tumbler accomplish the same feat as the barrel type tumblers?

A vibe will speed up the process considerably. I always tumble the rocks in my barrels until they are shaped and ready for the vibe. 2 days in 1000 and 1 or 2 days in polish in the vibe, they are done.Just my method, everybody does it differently. I guess to answer the question, both will give you basically the same results in the end. You cant use the coarse in the vibe to rapidly shape rocks as it will wear the barrel .Really saves time in the end.

Vibes are faster but will maintain shapes so you won't get the rounded pebbles like a rotary.

10 b. what? Some vibes (like the GyRoc and Thumler's Industrial) handle rock or jewelry metals and some are light duty and only for dry polishing metals.

i use the vibe for all stages. i like the more natural appearance of the stones retaining their interesting shapes. there are some drawbacks including some facets af stones that will not polish because they were not rounded. presently i am doing about 2 weeks in coarse (120 grit) before moving onto fine and polish. i do go through a lot of grit however needing to rinse and recharge about every 36 hrs.
