Howdy folks, Ran the saw awhile longer while I worked on my batch of cab preforms ( twenty five so far, half way to my batch of fifty). Here are a few pics. Thanks for looking.....Mel The next two cuts off the shrinkwood hunk. Interesting but not real good cabbing slabs. Another piece of shrinkwood. Cut both ends from this one and they weren't much good but the center is beautiful stuff. Will have to vice and cut it the other direction though because there ain't no way to cut it this way without using the slab grabber and pet wood in a slab grabber is asking for a broken blade. First slab off another hunk of wood. This one is gonna be nice cabbing stuff! And finally, a couple of slabs off some Basin Road Moss from the north Cady Mtns in Calif. I hunted everywhere for this vein after finding this as float, but the Cady's are just too big. Only stuff almost identical I've found was in nodular form and from way further back in the mountains. I really like this kind of moss! Closer look:

More nice ones Mel! I love the crackley / lightening bolt patterns in the top pic. Why isn't it good for cabbing?

Nate: The first ones do have some areas for cabbing but I prefer larger cabs for my collection and a couple of the fractured zones are not properly filled on or full of tiny crystal vugs. And quite frankly, I don't like to use a lot of filler when I cab unless it's a one of a kind specimen I deem worth the extra effort.....Mel

Mel - What about this area? Is it solid? Could you take a teardrop like this one?

Daniel: Yep, there are some clear areas but I've got a lot more of this wood and would rather work from a better slab. I'm so far behind on my cabbing that I've got about 200 preforms marked and trimmed so I'll keep slabbing while I work at the wheels. If I can't find a better slab to cut a specimen for my collection, then I'll work at saving one of the better sections form a sub par slab....Mel

I think that pattern in shrink wood is actually called " hexagonal fracturing". There are some awesome photos in this article about the subject of this phenom in Live Oak County : www.hgms.org/StartPageHTMLFiles/PaleoPetrifiedWoodArticles/Scott-HexFractSTexPetWood.pdfYou mentioned a link earlier and I looked for it. I am wondering if it is to this same site? That link is really worth looking at. I have tried to copy the photo but cant seem to extract it from the pdf file. It really is worth sharing. edited to add, after some fancy footwork I extracted this image from the pdf:
