Oh boy. Yesterday I woke up and had this itchy, bumpy red stuff around my thighs. Woke me up about 2 in the morning. So I go looking for a culprit and on the back side of my toilet is a small brown spider and a large black widow about the size of a quarter. The small brown one may have been the male bw. So I kilt the little fourletterworders! Slopped on some neosporin, 5 minutes later the itching stopped, went back to bed. Was fine all day yesterday. Now, about three hours ago, I start itching pretty much everywhere. So went to the loo and did a self-check in the mirror and about pooped myself! I'm literally covered in red blotches and streaks from fingers to neck to toes. Just now feeling it going up the back of my neck. I've had plenty of spider bites and I have a pretty good tolerance, and the poison usually is gone in 24 hours. It's been about 36 now and both thighs look like boiled lobster, and my feet have swollen so big that I can't put a shoe on!!! Doctor couldn't see me so I took these photos and sent them to her: Wish me luck, my stomach is now doing flips, I'm having problems breathing, so the wife is taking me downtown to the hospital.....

Robin I hope you're okay!
Note to all: keep the Benadryl (antihistamine) handy if you're exposed to spider bites, bee stings, or the like.

Benadryl didn't do anything for me. Normally I'm not allergic to anything but something got this going. They think it's multiple exposures to spider bites, I've had a lot lately cleaning out storage unit. Got into an entire nest of youngling spiders.
Now I have hives head to toe, including my eye. I've never itched so much in my life. Doc says it's a textbook case of anaphylaxis and I need to keep an epi pen with me at all times until it's 100% gone. Another exposure to whatever caused this, whether it be the spider bite or what, could stop my heart.

So glad to hear you are alright! Well almost alright! Thought it sounded like hives. When that happened to my sister from ?, still don't know what, they gave her Benedryl through iv drip. She was fine the next day. Didn't have problems with her breathing through, just hives.

Yikes. I knew there was a reason I hated spiders. Glad you're on the mend

Yeah, I've heard that some allergic reactions just keep building over exposure (like shell fish). I'm surprised that Benadryl didn't work, but then BWS venom is especially toxic.
Aveeno Bath might help a little with the itching if antihistamines don't work.
I hope you feel better soon! Chuck

Uggh, hope you get well soon. We have quite a few Black Widows here. I've been able to keep them out of the house by putting Ortho powder down around the outside walls. They do seem to stay in their webs..

Robin, glad to hear you went to the hospital, even though you probably should have gone sooner. Sounds like you are on the mend now so that's good news. You really should stop playing with spiders in the bathroom, you know they get a little irate if you disturb them when they are doing their business...LOL. Get well soon.

Hope you are doing well.....I got bit by a black widow many years ago...no fun but I had nowhere near the reaction you did...I just felt crummy like I had the flu for a few days.
Note on widow bites....don't let them give you the antivenom unless you are in serious trouble. You can only ever get it once in your life and it lowers the effectiveness of other antivenoms...so save that just in case you really need it in the future....

Had to go back today. I'm home now, all doped up. While there they were just about to push for a transfusion and one young doctor came up with a nice cocktail in a syringe and shot me full of some mix of epinephryn and steroids. Started feeling better almost immediately, but am home and sleepy like a big ole cat.
