I'm fairly new to vibrating laps, and the 2 areas I am still having trouble with are in finding easy ways to keep light pieces weighed down (so it doesn't take forever), and keeping the pieces protected so they don't chip each other. I'm curious what methods you all have found?
I have tried hot gluing fishing weights to the slabs, and am not satisfied with this yet. The weights often shake loose, and it is more time consuming than I'd like.
As for keeping slabs from chipping, I have heard about using rubber bands and various things taped around the slabs, but I seem to have a lot of slabs that have sharp, tapered edges that don't cooperate with this very well. I have been thinking about setting looped pieces of tubing around the slabs as floating bumpers next.
Any other ideas?

Tubing is what I used (actually I used Tygon braided tubing) but any vinyl tubing loops would work. Holding weight can be a challenge. A friend uses double sided tape but I never got that to stick. I used a refrigeration putty called "Permagum" but doubt you would find that easily. I found weights in my dad's stuff with globs of different colored candle wax so I'm assuming it worked for him. Good luck.

We got it in blocks like clay. You had to work it in your hands to soften it but then it would stick to anything in freezers, coolers cold, wet, anything. It likely is like the gum tape they use around RV windows.

I went to a tire store and picked up a bucket of used wheel weights. Melted them down into small catfood cans. For smaller ones to put on odd shaped stones, I included things like picture hangars, paperclips, etc sticking out of the lead that I can shape around the stone. Usually a dab of hot glue where the lead contacts and a glob to hold down whatever you used as protruding hooks will do the trick. Can up a picture later if that wasn't clear.

Thank you for the replies. I believe this is similar to the permagum brick you described John: www.drillspot.com/products/334248/virginia_pp-22_sealing_gum?s=1Tortuga that is a good idea to use those extra wires as bendable "holders". I'm not ready to start melting down lead yet but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks again for replies.

That's the stuff. I think Permagum was another brand name. We had another name for it but not appropriate here.

Have a look at: www.dbrockwerks.com/VibeLapInstr.pdf Some pretty good ideas here. Should you decide to put plastic tubing around the inside of the table, put pencil lead inside of it so it won't float up.
