I love digging that area - It's been several years since I've been there but that's from the Diatom Pits near George, Washington. I have pictures of opal veins 8 fee thick and running a couple hundred feet at these mines and the opal is a by-product of the mining operation. The last time I visited the location one of the mine working brought me a couple ton load with the huge front end loader and dumped it by my truck for easy picking!
Have fun with the material... It's great for cabs and spheres. Some will craze, but many pieces are very stable. Certain pieces look like opalized wood... but I've talked with several people and they say it's opalized coral which makes sense with the diatom pits.

Great info, thanks Jason! ..... A front end loader dumping a load in my truck, that would be sweet! ;D

Sitnwrap and Beefjello, you've sure got it right! So many people have helped me and many others, Randy included. It sure is nice to give a little back, and Randy, you deserve it.
Rockhound97058, I agree that it looks like petrified wood. I wonder about the coral information--I haven't seen a piece yet that looked like coral. But, who knows--I certainly don't claim to be an expert.
