Gary Gary, depending on the stone, and what I see after grinding through the chalcedony, I'll carefully start grinding away through layers of fire, looking for the brightest color. It's a gamble...sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. if you look at the upper left of the finished picture, you'll see where I gambled and lost... On the second piece, the bright colors where there already so I just carved away everything that wasn't fire and then polished.

That's amazing! Fire agates are so unique. You said it took you all week to do them? How many hours total do you think you put in one of these?
Thanks, Nate

Thanks, Geoff yeah, the rough tumbled for a week first. this helps me high grade my rough. You want to check on them periodically though because if color starts showing, the tumbler will grind it off pretty fast. The bulk of the 21hrs spent on the first piece was from grinding and then carving out/finding the best color. It's a time consuming process and it has to be done very carefully. Polishing is fairly quick in comparison; it only takes about 3 hours, to go through the 8 grits and polish. the second piece didn't take nearly as long since I didn't have to spend a lot of time searching for good color...it was already there. If you have rough with good color already in it, the carving time goes down pretty fast.
