I'm on my third belt in maybe six months with a Lortone 3A - both the broken ones looked cleanly broken, not abraded or anything like that.
I did probably over tighten the first belt, but was careful not to do so with the second one (which only lasted a month or so). I generally weigh my loads and don't really go over three pounds (current load that is burnishing after prepolish was about 3 lbs, 2 oz on my kitchen scale, including water). Am I overloading? Any suggestions?

Make sure pulleys are alligned. Tension should be tight enough to not slip but not too tight. You can use Thumler's #401 belts which are same size.

I've been watching for posts on this thread and it puzzles me. I've had 2 Lortone 3A's running since late 09 and have never done anything with them except lube the bearings with sewing machine oil or Wahl oil for hair clippers. And even then, it's not the 30 days as recommended, but when I remember. I've never taken my rotarties apart before, they just keep on tumbling. Plus, I am sure that I have over weighted the barrels too. I don't weigh them but sometimes they seem heavy. When your first belt broke was it the one that came brand new with your machine? How long did that one last? Did you get your two replacements from Lortone? I have yet to have a belt issue but would like to know what to do if and when it happens. This has sparked an interest in me. ~K

I'll have to check alignment. I didn't spend too much time looking when I replaced the last one, but I thought I did see some rubber build up on one side of the drive pulley. tntmom - the first belt that broke was the one that came with the tumbler. It started slipping and I (in hindsight) over tightened it in response. I was more careful with the first one I put in, but it didn't last very long. I got the belts from The Rock Shed. I'm ordering more now (and trying not to let too many things fall in the box with the belts ) - not sure if my 8 yr. old could stand it if we had to delay the finish of this run much more.
