Seem as though i recall mention of a Psilomelane collecting area near Quartzsite. Does anyone know of this area and where it might be?

I remember an area across the border in California, but it's a pretty fair drive from Quartzsite.

There is a very large mound of it but there are NO TRESPASSING signs all over the fence around it. It is right off of Hwy 60. I wouldn't try it but you can if you want. I will get the exact location when I go to Quartzite this weekend.

Yeah, I seem to remember a site north of Hwy 10 around the Arlington Mine and some around where the Hauser Beds are too. I do think the mine was posted when I went there and the other stuff was not of the quality to make good cabs and in very small pieces......Mel

That's the place Mel. Several miles east of the Hauser beds, and a fair drive north on dirt trails. Last time I was there, there was a flash flood, and we couldn't get in to the site. Got within about a mile of it, and were faced with a 200 yard wide river.

There are veins in Wiley Well district across from the now closed road to Thumb Peak. You can find small pieces in float throughout the district.

Hmmm.....trying to find something and somewhere good to collect while I am out there next week. Last year I went out near the old Planet mine and found chrysocolla. This year I would like to find something else and psilomelane seemed to be a good choice. Any other specific information would be more than welcome. I also would enjoy any other information/suggestions on collection areas within say an hours drive. I have taken my truck in to some rugged areas and I do not mind hiking. I just love the hunt and finding nice material to cut!!
Thank you everyone for you help.

If you like agate, just stop in Brenda, right off the highway! There is a mountain full of jasper and agate. You don't even have to climb! You just pull over on the shoulder, walk through the gate and start picking it up! Lots of bright red and yellow moss, yellow jasper and red jasper and some with white fortification. Let me know and I will try to hook you up!

If you have the Mary Francis Strong book or any guide with Wiley Well map, stop and see me. I can pin point where the location I mentioned is. It is about 45 miles from here.

Chris: How about trying the pebble terraces about five miles west of Palo Verde? Lots of jasper, pet wood, coral etc . It's all covered by desert varnish but no telling what you'll find with some close looking and chipping. I've seen some beautiful quartz gems from that area and there's a lot of area to explore ......Mel

Thank you everyone for your tips. I actually didn't do much rockhounding this time. I went out with the gang and ended up rolling over a boulder. That put an end to further outings as I wasn't sure about my truck. I just might have to take a trip just to hound!!
