Does anyone out there own one?
My sister the Liberal does, of course. She's had it for 3? years or so. She's had to replace both headlight bulbs already. Wanna guess how much a headlight bulb cost? Over $300. For a dang light bulb! It looks exactly like an ordinary halogen bulb for any other car that cost less than $20.
If something really bad goes wrong with it, I can only guess what that might cost.
If someone gave me one of those durn things, I'd sell it and buy me a real vehicle. Like a Ford, who is not owned by the government.

Amen Curt! I read once a chevy trail blazer is "greener" than a prius. It takes so much energy making all the "green" components for the prius, that in the end it is a bigger waste.

I drive a '79 Chevy K10. When it comes to my carbon footprint, just call me Sasquatch.
PS I think a new headlight bulb for my truck is in the 7 dollar range.

My sister had one but got rid of it when she moved to a country home. Think she told me a new battery costs like $2500. Main complaint she had though was that there was no room to carry much in it and it kinda sucked for mountain driving. I know I thought it was pretty dang ugly car and I could buy a lot of gas for 2500 bucks. Might make sense for the long commuter but I don't put a lot of miles on a car now anyway so would rather have something useful. Her initial reasoning was it was green and used half as much gas as a big truck but when she drove twice as much she was actually using the same amount of gas as my truck *L*...Mel

Wife's travel agent had one for just short of a year. Hit a water puddle and it shut down and would not restart. Had it towed to the stealership where they said they couldn't fix it so it would have to be shipped back to the factory for repairs, but that they would give him a loaner car. The factory is in Tsutsumi, Japan! How much do you think that costs? The guy told them to keep the darned thing, traded it on something "normal".

I have a 2009 Camry Hybrid and love it. I average 35 mpg and I'm a lead foot. Haven't had a single problem with it. Last summer we drove it from here to Miami and back, with our 3 kids. Have also taken it to Cincinnati several times; only have to fill up once for over 700 miles.
Previous vehicle was a '94 Ranger which was great for the first five years, then slowly declined to the point where I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Had it crushed as a Cash for Clunkers deal, even though it had only 135K miles.

Hey Baz, I bet your truck doesn't put out much more if any more pollution than a newer truck. I was into 4 wheeling for a while, and remember a guy ranting about his old chevy 4 wheeling rig putting out less than his new toyota truck, but the toyota was legal because it had all the modern emissions equipment on it.

I just bought my second Hybrid Honda. The first one (Civic) had 180,000 miles when I traded it in. Lightbulb $10.99; battery, $3,000. However, Honda had a program where they paid all but $1,000 for it. MPG--50-54 mpg. I can't imagine going back to a lower mpg vehicle; I would have to seriously alter my eating habits. Then again, after what I ate during Thanksgiving/Christmas, perhaps I should borrow Texaswoodie's vehicle.
I really don't understand why the desire to save money on gas is considered a "Liberal" trait(?)
Susan
P.S. I was in D.C. with the car a few years back when the hurricane hit--plowed through mucho water with no problems. I actually did better than most "normal" cars. The weight from the battery stabilizes the vehicle so it is great in snow as well.

This is my baby, my other hobby, my mistress. She takes up whatever time I don't spend with rocks, flying RC planes, or making jewelry. She actually comes before most of my other hobbies. She's run up and down the track many times at Palm Beach Intl Raceway, plus several other smaller race tracks. She's semi-retired from racing now and mainly a show car, but definitely NOT a Prius....lol...

Chuck I don't know what she got. I just saw the mechanic standing there with a tiny $300 lightbulb and I nearly fell on the floor. Susand Nothing wrong with saving gas. My pickup gets 20 MPG. If gas goes to $10 a gallon. I'll still be driving my pickup.......Maybe not as much though. The Prius is a Liberal badge of sorts. The original cost alone kills any money you might save on gas mileage, but they all just have to have one. Curt

It is funny - I know several of my buddies who ran out and bought second car when the gas prices jumped up. So I asked them - OK to save a few a couple bucks each time you fill up - you paid for another car, have to buy license for it, insurance and pay for maintenance? Looks to me to be cheaper and just stick with your single car and pay the extra buck or two.
I run a older Toyota 4Runner with a 22R 4Banger. I have it built with Cam, Header, Intake system larger tires etc.. etc... and I still pull 17 to 22 miles a gallon in it. Plus in 4wheel low range it'll crawl anywhere I need to go. Works great in the Ochoco Mt's in Central Oregon - No forest service road closure berm can stop me lol.

Like me, I bought mine thinking I was going to get a great savings in gas mileage. It's the right size {small}, it's a convertible, it seats 4 (not always comfortably), so it must get great mileage!?!
Nope, guess they failed to mention that when you're pushing out 325hp at the crank out of a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine, you're only going to get about 17.2mpg on average (exactly what I'm getting right now - I monitor it weekly).

I suppose the Prius is a liberal badge because people have made it that. My neighbors in Virginia got one (they are best labelled "apathetic") and loved it--just traded it in on another. Had I had the money this go-round, I would have considered it. At $23,000 it is a very comfortable car. I didn't have the money, though, so I have a $20,000 hybrid Honda.
I do wish Prius would change that awful bit**y voice on the GPS, though, to perhaps Sam Elliot.

*L* I don't want a friggin car to talk to me at all! Frankly, talking cars creep me out bigtime. That's about as bad as clowns, carnies, lawyers, and monkeys. If the wife and I were still commuting a combination of about 300 miles a day like we used to though, we sure wouldn't be driving Jeeps *L*....Mel

Hey, Mel, watch the lawyer stuff. I *used* to agree with you about machines that talked. However, as my eyesight continues to deteriorate at a far too rapid pace, a talking car *might* prevent a lot of annoying turnarounds, magnifying glasses, pull to the side of the roaders, etc. I don't have a talking car yet, but if they get Sam Elliot I maybe could learn to live with it.
