I am looking for a place to collect some good Llanite, can anyone help with directions to a spot that I will be able to get permission to dig at? I don't mind paying a fee to the landowner for this...............
Thanks! Rodney

There is a granite company a few miles away in Llano that usually has llanite scraps on their scrap heap.So I understand.

Go to Llano and turn left. ;D I've seen sites listed on the internet. Do a little research and I bet you can come up with a couple of spots.

There is a thread here somewhere that discusses this topic. I will see if i can get a link up to it. I think its right on 16 going north about 7 miles from town i think but i will check for sure. George

Rodney How much are you looking for? I have some. I buy a huge amount of rough rocks for resale, but in this case, I am mainly wanting to go by the place and collect some myself. I usually drive from Atlanta, Georgia to Tucson, Arizona and back for the gem show. This puts me at driving about 4,000 miles round trip and takes a looooooong time. I wont have time to really hound a place down so I was hoping for some fairly exact directions to a good spot. I have read ( maybe here) that there are ranches that will let you dig for a fee so i was just asking around about that.

Thanks for the link and that looks easy to find. I will be hunting petrified wood near three rivers, tx and as I headed to tucson my next ovenight stop was going to be in Junction, Tx. It looks like if I stay overnight in Llano, Tx that this will only slow me down by an hour ( travel wise & not counting any time rock hunting ).
If anyone has been in Llano before rockhunting and is willing to help me on an exact spot it would be appreciated! I should be out that way in a couple of weeks.

Rodney don't be afraid to go north onHwy 16 about 6 miles. Posted on September 8, 2010 by rayduplechain Well, I had a long holiday weekend with no plans until my sister was hospitalized in Austin. So I figured a visit to her could be turned into a rocktrip. After visiting her and seeing her health was improving I turned my attention to my mini roundup. I traveled to Llano to find some llanoite. We found a nice room and settled in Sat. night with anticipation of our upcoming adventure. Sunday morning we traveled north of town on Hwy.16 to the spot where an outcropping was at the roadside. I figured most of would have been picked over and I would have to settle on scraps. When we arrived we walked around surveyed the right(east) side and found large boulders, much to big for me to lift. No small pieces as I suspected. We went on the left(west) side of roadway and found pretty much the same except someone had dug up a real nice boulder that was probably a little too much to pick up. I hit it once with a hammer that I had , and it split in two. perfect for handling. Loaded it up in our truck and started probing around the ground with a small prybar I had and pieces of llanoite was popping up all over. With little effort we had about 400 lbs of llanoite. I was so happy! Here we was at 10:00am with hundreds of lbs. of llanoite. Ray

yes the quality was great. There was some soft brittle stuff but you just have to cull it out. There is still lots of good things there. It seems everyone picks in the same spot on the east side of road. Pick the west side downhill and probe around. Ray ps don't forget me with the GQ.

Thanks! i sent the main guy an email about the GQ . I am fairly good friends with him so maybe he will tell me.
Most of the guys that are digging that stuff told me it was where they were building a lake and they are through and now the water is rising to cover the deposit. This sounded a little " made up " to me .
I later heard that wasnt the case at all , so maybe I will find out.
I do know those guys were getting truckloads at a time but it was tough sledge hammering the whole way.
