My nieces from MO found this piece while cleaning out their Dad's garage. They sent it to me as kind of a joke in a box of MO rocks they had collected for me. So great that Tony will cut it up for me. There sure are many great people on this forum.

It seems to me that would be an old piece,as the colors arent as varied as more modern pieces.Didn't have many colors to choose from back then. But, maybe not.By no means am I saying its not beautiful.

I was thinking the same thing Snuffy. It's a very cool piece, but seems they ran a lot of white vehicles through that paint booth. As a side note, does anyone know how long it took to make each layer? I suppose if someone was ambitous enough, they could make their own...

Wow, I can't wait to see what you do with that. I've been trying to find some, along with slag glass, that I can work on my flat lap. That is so neat!!

Chromenut, we have an unlimited supply of slag glass here. There are several old defunct forges around this area. Its not super colorful but its nice for slag. Let me know if you want a box.

That material could be from a boat painting establishment years ago, I have seen finished cabs of that material called Boatite. I don't know how true that is but that could explain the large amount of white :2cents:

Fordite or boatite??? Waxman, just found out there was a boat factory in the town the large piece came from in the '60's and '70"s. A couple family members actually worked there. That may have been the source of the specimen. Don't know for sure. Still a pretty piece and may make some nice cabs and slabs I look forward to sharing.

Fran, no need to wait for warmer weather. I'll be cutting this up on a trim saw in the basement.

i would be lary about marketing that as Fordite Tony. There is a registered trademark for the name, and ive worked directly with the names owner. I only say that because that is not actual fordite, but a similar cured paint material. Which since the popularity of fordite took off over 8 years ago, there have been many people trying to make it. And from my knowledge, the actual fordite that came from the Detroit plant, or from the UK plant would never produce layers of white that white and large. but a neat fun cutter for sure.

Thanks Shane. I find it odd that you can get a trademark for a product you don't even make. I'll go with Boatite since it apparently came from a boat making facility. I wonder if anyone has a registered trade mark for that. Maybe we need to come up with a new generic name that everyone can use. How about Paintite? Lacquerite? Krylonite? lol
