i have both on hand and do my last grind before polishing in my Lot-O vibe. i have been using the ao 500 but i don't know which 500 to use on which stones. is there any difference in them? thanks, charlie

my understanding (and I well could be wrong) is that Aluminum oxide breakes and stays sharp as you use. Silicon carbide is harder an Aluminum oxide but dulls as you use it.

The sc grit in the coarser stages stays sharp as it breaks down,as opposed to ao which gets rounder. In the 500 grit,I just dont know for sure,I've ordered the ao 500 by mistake and have both.I rarely use 500,interested to hear what someone in the know says.

What Snuffy said. SiC stays sharp, and I believe is cheaper too

at 500 there should not be much effect. IMHO the SiC is more of a FINE, while the AO is more of a pre-polish because it dulls/breaks quicker.
