Hi all. Now that I can upload movies and post them here I thought I'd show you the gyrotory flat lap I made from a machine I got at a surplus store. The machine is called a gyrotory shaker I assume is used in a lab. All I did was mount a 12"x1/2" aluminum disc and add the rubber bumper around the circumference and it makes a great lap for polishing slabs or geode halves. I got the machine for $25 and I already had the aluminum disc and the rubber bumper so it was a pretty cheap way to make a flat lap equivalent to a vibe lap. Click on the picture, then in the new window, click the start arrow and it should play the movie. Sorry about the quality of the movie, but I didn't want to bog down the dialup members.

Man, that must be a pretty violent shaker. This one is variable speed.

Hey Stoner, was it something like this? I'm a Medical Technologist in a hospital lab and we use these as card rotators for certain types of tests. Does the platform move in a circle? If that is what you used, I'm going to be checking the old equipment closet!

Oh well, the movie won't work for me, guess my software is showing it's age. It sounds cool though!

Yep, that's exactly what it is except the one in the pic is a newer model. It's got a timer and an intesity control. I just bolted the disc to the existing plate. Cher, it doesn't make any noise at all except whe the slabs or whatever is on it bump into each other. The only thing funny about it is the fact that I save about $300 by using my imagination.

I've had it for awhile Cher, but I just discovered that I can upload movies to photobucket and post them here. So people who can't get the movie to work will only have to guess how it works, which is why I never posted a still pic of it.

It wouldn't work on my first try. I just got a popup saying that I needed Flash Player and that I could download it. Once I did that, the movie worked fine. I only have a Pentium II, 350 MHz, and 128 RAM.

Cool Stoner! I have a "modified Gy Roc" that I use for a small flat lap. I picked up some of the medical tubing that I use to circle my little slabs. That way they won't bump into each other as well as the sides of the pan I use. I have found that the new cling wrap stuff that is out is great to cover the thing with. The slurry doesn't dry out as fast. Again, great idea! Bill

Wow that's neat! I think I am inheriting a flat lap then spins today I hope I can put a rubber bumper around it but maybe for my thundereggs it won't matter so much?

You'll need something around the edge, otherwise the slabs or whatever you put on it will fly of the edge. I'm gonna put my geodes on it today for the final polish. I'll post the results soon.
