I've read a number of different ways of doing things, and of course, I can never find the answers I'm looking for again.
My question, and forgive me please for not finding it in a search, is when do you use the borax (and why) and also, soap (Ivory?).
We've got a batch getting ready for pre-polish later today.

hi Crgator , using soap , called Burnish stage . is t clean up the possible grit that might get transferred to next stage . the helps much better than the standard water rinse . hte grit could be caught in very small crevices . it also helps clean the polish film off of rocksafter polish stage . i was told that borax and the ivory flakes . don't lather up as , say dish soap or hand soap. don't pour the left over Borax on plants as it kills them . although next summer , i intend on trying it on the poison ivy next to my garage . --paul

Thanks, Paul. We ended up using shaved Ivory Snow. Wow, it really amazed me how much more it seemed to clean the rocks. Being new at the hobby, there's a lot to learn. Trial and error and what we can glean from these boards, and if all goes well, we'll soon have some good results.
