I'm working on an idea, and need some input. Sitting in my basement is a very old New Hermies engraving machine. It's one of the manual machines, not the new computerized type. I'm going to check it over, and see if it can be fitted with diamond bits for engraving stone. The motor sits above the machine, well out of the way of any water spray, and it would be easy to set up an overhead water supply. Any ideas or opinions would be appreciated. Don

Does the bit turn as a drill would or does it slide over the work and scratch the surface of the material ?

The bit spins. Right now all I have is the plastic engraving stylus for it, and 2 sets of the master letters. It was an old estate sale buy that has been gathering dust in my basement.

Sonds like an interesting piece of equipment. Doesn't sound too involved to get it to work for stone use. One thought I have is the speed at which it engraves adjustable? Obviously it would need to go slower than it did with plastic.
Got pix?

Is it something like this? I see you would move it manually to "write" with. Very cool! Nate

Wow, the big free standing one? Cool! I'm reading the company history right now. I bet one of those machines is in the maintenance dept at my workplace too, as they make their own signs and such.

Mine is actually an older version of this machine. The newer ones are all aluminum castings. Mine is a heavy old cast iron machine, but in excellent shape. Weighs a ton. I had to take it apart to move it to my basement. Did you see the price of the one in the link ? I paid $100.00 for mine. After googling it, I see that they have the diamond stylus for it in 2 or 3 sizes. I may need to have new pulleys made for it, to slow it down some. It spins pretty fast right now. It has a brush type motor, so I might be able to use a speed control on it too.

Awesome score Don. I was curious to what you paid after seeing that price, but didn't want to ask.

From what I learned from the next of kin at the estate sale, the old boy had a lock and key business, and did a little engraving on the side. The engraver had set in the back room of a heated shop for years. It took several days and several pint cans of acetone to get all of the dried oil and grime off of it. When I finally got it cleaned, all of the bushings and shafts were still nice and tight, and the motor ran perfect, so I was very happy with my purchase. Now if I can convert it to lapidary use, I'll really be happy. I'll try to get a pic of it tomorrow. Don

Wow! Nice score. I have been looking at those so I can engrave on the knives I do. Would be awesome, but can't afford that much in one just to do a little engraving. Also looking at an air engraver. ken

Hey Ken, I picked up an air scribe at an estate sale too. Paid $5.00 for it. Nobody else knew what it was. Don

Here's a pic of my engraver. It's dirty from sitting in my wood shop for the last 14 years.
