Hi all. Ya know, as I was reading the posts on this terrific forum, it dawned on me just how much we've all learned in the few years we've been on here. When we first got on this board, most of us didn't know the difference between a brecciated stone and a picture jasper. Hell, we didn't even know how to spell brecciated!!! I think it's great that Mark gave us this outlet and it's been fun seeing all of us slowly gaining knowledge of this craft, or money pit, however you want to look at it. And it seems there is still much to learn. I even have this site set as my home page. Could you imagine the withdrawls I'd go through if I fired up my browser one day and this site was gone? Well, I just wanted to say thanks to all the great rockhounds that make this site what it is, and to Mark for providing it for us.

Have to agree with you Ed...This is a great place! Good people with lots of knowledge sharing with one another. It's probably the best resource on the web for rock tumbling advice, instruction, etc...And a wealth of knowledge in other areas of Lapidary.
Mark is one of those unusually generous people who has devoted lots of time to his love for the hobby and helping others find joy in the art of tumbling ( I know...I've built a few web pages and it can be very time consuming!) with no compensation save for the friendship of those who visit.
Here's to Mark and all the other great contributors to this site.....Cheers!!! ;D

yep, if it weren't for this site i would have never achieved the level of interest or expertise (not to mention equipment and poundage of stone) in the Lapidary Arts. also meeting (electronically, anyway) a great bunch of folks from all over the planet that share this love of rocks and minerals and jewelry and plants and pets and family.
as we approach 1000 members (although only about 50 or so are active), i'd like to thank everyone and especially Mark (who used to be Andy) for making my life richer. (or poorer in a literal (dollar) sense...j/k).
cheers,
KD

Cheers to Mark for putting this together for us and for enriching my life (and my daughter's too although she won't admit to that!)

Thanks to this post, I can now spell brecciated ;D I wonder what the total weight of stone might be that we've all gone through. Just two pounds from each member would be a ton, and I alone have about 200 pounds or more. I know that some of you die-hards have a couple tons. lol

When I think about what I thought I knew three months ago and what I think I know now, I'm amazed. This site has been a hobby saver for me! I've decided whenever I get the urge to go back to school yet again instead I'll just pick up a new hobby. The education is astounding! (And the bill will be much less.... Or not.)
Randy, in the past three months alone I've purchased/received almost 200 pounds myself...and I'm not that addicted. Really, I'm not.
Stop laughing!

In started out in lapidary before I found this site and have learned even more since I got here.
The thing with lapidary is that there is really no end to what you can do ,or should I say create. It can and will take you as far as your imagination will allow,,,,,You can see that right here with all of the great lapidary projects we already have going.
It's funny this thread started as I was just talking to KD about how far some of us have come and are still climbing the tree of lapidary.Sands is another guy I remember talking to about how to tumble this and that. Now look at him!!
I get a LOT out of sharing and so do a lot of you too,,,,,
Just think if it weren't for Mark we would have never got this far or got to know each other and share our knowledge, equipment, rocks or even our friendship!
I really miss being able to spend the time I used to on this site but maybe when and if I retire I'll be a real pain in the butt sticking my nose into everything,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,again!!!,,,,,,,,,,Hope so!!
Thanks for being you!!

I would think the owners/creators of this group are very proud, not only with the wealth of information they have a big part in creating, but such an active and enlusiastic group of members. I myself have learn from other members in this group, in the short time i have been a part. I just wish i had more time in the day to read and respond to the wealth of post and threads in this group. One day.

If you ever get any extra time(yea, right) it's pretty fun to go back to the first 10 pages or so of the General Rocks section and read some of the posts. What really shows up in doing that is, we all still answer the same questions asked by newbies as were asked way back then. That's part of why this board is THE BEST on the net.

Well I know for a fact that if not for this forum, I would have dropped this hobby like a bad habit. I was so frustrated that my rocks weren't looking like I thought they should, and all the basic instructions I was reading weren't getting me results. But the people on here(my friends) set me straight. I think the biggest thing I have learned, and learned to accept, is no matter how good a rock looks, or how excited you get things can turn around quickly. There are so many variables in this hobby. But I love it! As far as buying rocks I am one of the lightweights I have only bought about a 1100 pounds in a year, but I have done a lot of driveway rocks also. Thank you all, Mark especially you for keeping us up and going. Terry

i was rofl last night watching the show "cops". they stopped a suspicious looking man that was walking in a well-to-do neighborhood. he said he was homeless for the time being. the cop asked if he had anything in his pockets that would stick him and the fellow said he had some needles but they weren't in his pockets so the cop proceeded to check his pockets. he pulled out rocks and asked what that was all about. the guy said he just likes rocks. then the cop checked out the make-shift bundle the guy was carrying which was his coat. it was full of rocks and the cop was even more puzzled and said "hey you really do like rocks don't you" and i'm falling off the couch laughing. the guy says he collects them hoping to do something with them one day. what i really want to know is WHO IS MISSING FROM THE BOARD? was that our "missing box" he was carrying? i think he said he was on the way to rock bottom . on a serious note, i panic if i can't get to this board even for a few minutes! kim

This forum has changed many things for me. I've never met such kind people in my life and if it hadn't been for my interest in rocks I would never have met any of you. My life changed dramatically after having found this forum and it's all due to it's wonderful members. Thank you Mark for building this "home" and to all of my rock family that have so enriched my life.

Like any intellegent riter ov words I now keep this page as my homepage and when the wife changes it back I freek!! So, I've stapled her fingers together and they can only type the letters RTH! Isn't that great?!! Really tho, the wonderful folks around here that don't get peeved at those of us who don't know the difference between a geode and a thunderfart...er....egg for axking all those questions that make this a wonderful place to be. Thanks to all of you that have helped me try to understand the how and the whys, and to Mel especially for putting up with my constant picture sending asking "What is this, what is that what is this huh? Can you tell me? Huh? Can you? Huh? huh? And thank you to those of you that have sent me those pesky little 8oz tumblers, giving them a good home is a good thing. Some of them have been put into service and others have bit the dust....or grit as the case may be. I'm always on the lookout for those little orphans that need homes from families that just didn't have the patience nor the wherewithall that it takes to do a google search about Rock Tumbling!! That tells them they won't get a batch of polished stones in 4 days!! Or that buy them for their 2 year olds dreaming of the day that their kid will be the world famous geologist!! Because there are so many.....aren't there? Any way. Thanks! And speaking of 8oz tumblers I have to go check on my kids to see if 2 need changing and the other 2 need feeding (more grit) and to see if their 3# brother is about done with the first stage of rounding off those Georgia Queen Picture Jasper that I baked!

I too appreciate this board very much. It's the best tech support in the world for this hobby, and the people are the best, as well. I was very lucky to find this place a few months ago, or else I would have probably just set the 8 oz. tumbler aside and ditched the hobby. Thanks to jrtrio, the tumbler has a new home, and thanks to this board, I've got 5 of the 3# barrels tumbling away in the garage! It has enriched my life so much.
