It took a lot of courage to decide to post this. My goal is to incorporate wire wrapped stones, cabs, etc into my jewelry designs along with my own lampwork beads. Yesterday I went to Michaels and picked up some wrapping wire (went back today for more with a coupon.) Armed with Randy's tutorial, it took me several hours to do the 1st one and you can definitely tell I’m a newbie and definitely not the fault of Randy's tutorial. This is a stone bead I’d gotten from Fire Mountain Gems. It’s intended to string because there is a small drilled hole at the top. I figure if you stand on the other side of the room and squint at the monitor it will look half way decent. ;D I definitely need my prescription glasses re-done and a stronger light. And lots of practice, which I'm looking forward to. Also have a couple of grooved cabs coming from Christopher and a bunch more wire ordered, too. This afternoon, I may attempt to wrap a small oval piece of tumbled wood I found on the beach in Massachusetts

blr2449, that is a beautiful piece. don't have to stand on the other side of the room for that one. Note, try making your pics a little bigger. Critque is what you're looking for?

I think that is a fantastic start! A bead is a hard first wrap to do! Cabs have flat sides until the gentle slop that makes the dome. You are off to a great start so keep up the wrapping! It will get easier and easier! Fran

No, not critique. When I get better I'll post this a bigger pic of this one for comparison. I cut my wires too short, they kept slipping out of my hand, and my loops look more like free form trapezoids. I just wanted to show I *have* been attempting stuff and not just talking about it. Oh, is there a formula for determining how much wire to cut? Thanks, Barbara

Barbara, I think your first wrap is great. You tried some different things, and it has "flair." The nuts and bolts take awhile (I'm still working on it), but the creativity is what makes work stand out, and you've got that.
Formula: Measure around the outside of what you are wrapping (or wrap a piece of tape around and mark where it meets at the top). Measure the length of the tape. Add on 1-2 inches for the bail, depending on how high you want the bail. Then add on how much wire you want left to play with. Then I add on another inch because I always screw up.

Not bad at all for a first attempt Barbera. My first one took several hours too. Now I think I'm down to just a couple of hours ;D.

I think it looks great! Sooooo much better than my first one I tried last night, at midnight no less. Needless to say, I took the wire off and threw it away this morning...it was THAT bad. Yours is gorgeous though!

looks a lot better then my first wrap. Thank you. I think we are our own worst critics. I sent a pic to my sister who replied "What a cool idea and the piece in the bottom picture is GORGEOUS!! I think it came out great!! " *I* see all the places where I messed up. BUT...it was a lot of fun and I will continue to practice. I haven't gotten your cabs yet but I think all this snow has slowed delivery.

Susan Thanks, Susan. It was a lot of fun. And thank you for the measuring hints. I'm going to print out your message. I've been a member of a bead forum for several years and have learned not to post photos of anything I do. Unless you are part of the elite they just ignore you with no comments. I've learned to share them with the ladies who buy them. Thus, my hesitation posting on RTH. It's much friendlier here. Barbara

Barbara,I think your first attempt is super ! I was all fumble fingers for a long time, obviously the more you do the better you are at controling the wire & fingers. I understand your hesitation for posting I am leary about that too as we really have tallented people on this site, but just keep in mind everyone has their own style so go for it and develope yours! Sounds like you need to find a new beading forum Barbera. There's some awesome cabbers, wrappers, and artists here. Everyone is willing to share info, and not stick their nose up at anyone.

I don't post much on there anymore, Nate, unless it's to comment in the Family Room about something totally un-lampwork related. There are also some folks who are friendly to me, but I still don't post photos though.
The best reason for me to use it is notices of sales and bulk buys. :-)

blr2449, that is a good wrap, especially for a first time. We all had to start somewhere ya know ;-) Definitely keep practicing and keep posting, we love to see each others work here. I agree with Fran that beads are hard to wrap. I prefer cabs. If you have painter's tape and the stone keeps slipping, tape that son of a gun to the wire, it may help you. I still do that on a slippery cab or one that's not cooperating. Keep wrapping.

I think you are going to be really good at wrapping. For a first wrap, that is very very good! I like it.

I'm going to use them and cabs (or stones I've tumbled) together in bracelets or necklaces. I'm going to keep in mind using painter's tape. My hands stay dry all the time so that tape will help. In addition, I broke my right hand a number of years ago (crashed my motorcycle) and the fingers didn't heal straight so I have difficulty holding things in my right hand. But, I manage. And with all the support and help I've gotten here I'm gung-ho. Got my Inland Wizling grinder today and jewelry bits. Can't wait for that next batch of rocks to finish.
