On a regular cabochon sticking a superglued dop in the freezer works. But how do you remove superglue from a very thin piece without breaking it?

Try soaking it in warm water for a little while if it's on a wood dowel. water soaks up into the wood and the cab will let go.

Bob, acetone may make it let gobut, you have to let soak a little while

P/S where gloves! It takes 4 seconds for acetone to get to your liver from the time your skin absorbs it!

Stolen from Wikipedia "Acetone is believed to exhibit only slight toxicity in normal use, and there is no strong evidence of chronic health effects if basic precautions are followed"
"Acetone is naturally produced and disposed of in the human body as a result of normal metabolic processes. Reproductive toxicity tests show that it has low potential to cause reproductive problems. In fact, the body naturally increases the level of acetone in pregnant women, nursing mothers and children because their higher energy requirements lead to higher levels of acetone production. The medical community is now using ketogenic diets that increase acetone in the body to reduce epileptic attacks in infants and children who suffer from recalcitrant refractory epilepsy"
Women (mostly) have been using it form nail polish removal.

Thanks Dr Joe, for the education I did not know the body produced acetone. Just seems kinda wrong since acetone is extremely flamable

Thanks everyone. I guess I will stick with the black dop wax I have been using. Would reheating the wax be the best way to release from a very thin piece. Approx 1 -2mm thick?

Stick it in the freezer for at least 10 minutes. If, when you pick it up and gently try to take the cab off it doesn't budge, put it back in for a few more minutes. *Make sure the cab and nail/stick are not wet first. That can cause it to freeze to the stick and give you just as much trouble getting the cab off*. Fran

acetone and time work
or if you are using a nail as a dop it is possible with a VERY HOT flame to heat the nail and let the heat transfer to the joint, the glue will let go before the stone gets hot. the stone with get warm but usual not hot enough to do any damage. do it with ventilation as the fumes are not good for you.

what about a metal stick like a screw or a roofing nail? Hold the nail or screw with a pair of pliers and then heat the far end with a torch, hold the cab over something soft, when the heat gets down to the glue the cab will fall right off. Have a great day............Tony

I tried heating the nail with a torch, about 1.5" from the stone & had 2 out of about 20 cabs crack on me.
Putting them in the freezer didn't help. Even after 24 hrs in the freezer, I broke 2 cabs prying them off. Now I soak them in acetone overnight.
I use a small drop of medium thick superglue. Perhaps the thin stuff would come off easier.
I'm going to try to make a vacuum dop because I'm into instant de-dopification! How's that for a new word? Lynn

I have just experimented with using superglue plus golf tee dops for the first time. A soak in acetone overnight was all I needed to remove the cabochons. As far as health effects of acetone, you must be aware that most or all women regularly use acetone to change their fingernail and toenail polish, and yet we out-live men, according to the life insurance charts. If you are very worried about acetone, use the kind from the drugstore intended to be used on human nails and I just don't believe you would have much to worry about. I do not understand why putting a SUPERGLUED dop in the freezer would work, although I've found this works well for removing the old green wax dops I previously used.

as mentioned, soaking overnight in acetone works great for hard agates and jaspers. I wouldn't try it with a piece of stabilized turquoise though....

Dop wax comes in different strengths. Green, red and black. I think black is the hardest, red the middle and green the easiest or less stickiest. I use green and recommend it over either the black or red.
Sounds like you're on a nail... two reasonable choices only... soak in acetone or heat and melt the glue.
They make a special acetone dissolver called attack! or something like it, but it's just expensive acetone....
Then again, you could grind it off. hehehehehe NOT!

I'm glad I came across this thread! I've been using super glue on a nail and 24 hrs in the freezer made no difference at all, except the nails were cold to hold onto! I'll try heat next time. Why not hold the cab and let the nail drop? Chuck

I bought some superglue debonder & it wasn't what I expected. It took several applications & scraping of the softened glue. It was probably just (expensive) acetone. Like Don said, 24 hours in a jar of acetone does the trick. Lynn

that is why I use wax! I have never ever ever ever (great just jinxed myself)had problems with wax not releasing. Don't get me wrong- Super Glue has many uses in my shop- but just not for dopping.
