I used a store-bought mix for my first full run so I didn't destroy anything I really cared about. Fairly pleased, although I did get about 20% that need some more work. Since I have the double barrel rotary I also did a run a beach pebbles from the Washington Coast. Not spectacular, but fun! Attachments:

Good tumble! I did the same thing-bagged rocks and beach pebbles. They turned out well enough to tell me I was doing something right. My 2nd batch is in the tumbler.
Have fun!!

Nice! That is how I started too! Sometimes we get so caught up in the gotta haves, or latest fads in tumbling that we forget about the basics if taking dull stone and making it shiny!

I really like the beach stones. My favorite is top row 2nd from the left. Good job.

I love beach pebbles! The best thing about them is the satisfaction of knowing they were all hand picked by you! I noticed you are in WA too, western I assume since you've been at the coast recently? If you haven't been yet you should check out the Burke Museum at the UW. They have a fantastic gemology section with so much local stuff it will blow your mind. The displays show you what to look for in rough, how to id what you've found, where to look and how to tell if it's gem quality. They also have someone there showing and explaining how to cab with a flat lap, how to test for hardness and other tests that use some sort of mild acid. Also is full of dinosaur fossils and Indian artifacts!

I haven't been to the Burke in years (like since I graduated with my Geology degree 11 years ago... *cough*, I'm a bad-bad-bad alumni!!). Maybe it deserves a good field trip of it's own. Now I just need another trip to the beach to get my fix. Didn't find any agates larger than a pencil eraser and the tumbler is hungry for more!

Awesome Aimee (even if you are a bad-bad-bad alumni)!! My son is at BCC right now just praying to get accepted there!!!
Ditto on the coast. Was out there last June and found some amazing stuff. The best finds were unakite, epidote, some awesome agates, quartz of course, flint, sandstone, rhyolite and the most beautiful jasper I've ever seen, it had 5 different colors in it, chipped and undercut before polish. Still polished good though and my niece calls it the "Twi-Light" rock.

(modified: I think I labeled the finds correctly, I had them ID'd here on RTH...the unakite might be bloodstone but it looks more like unakite)
