Yachats, Oregon. I took a trip in my spiffy new '89 Toyota to check out the beaches. Low tide was at 10 AM or so today, not a minus tide. The beaches have either tumbled basalt and sandstone at the cliff edges or all sand. I found...um...4 agates and some pieces of misc jasper and a couple of fossil sandstone pieces after stopping at 5-6 different beaches from Lincoln City south to Yachats. I also found a really really old-looking rusted/corroded iron bolt bent into a 'u'. At least the seagulls kept me company. Yeah. So...if you were planning to go to the Oregon coast this week I probably wouldn't. Beaches are blanketed in sand, I didn't see one gravel bar. But I did see this on the way home...

Pictures of the "ancient bent bolt": It has a square head and doesn't appear the have any threads, if it ever had any. Could this be a big ole' logging spike used to nail rafts together? Dunno why it would have a square head though. Close-up: (what makes it corrode away in strings like that?) Update: found out it's wrought iron. When did they stop making wrought iron logging spikes/bolts/ship pins/ Any input would be appreciated.

You have a good ID, that is wrought iron. It is still made in England, in batches of about seven hundred pounds, which is a very small piece of iron. It is made by beating the slag out of a red hot piece of cast iron. If you have a blacksmith near you, this is good trading material. Much more valuable that common steel. Most ships spikes like this are well over a hundred years old. When wrought iron is at red heat, it works like clay. It is also much more rust resistant that steel. Woody
