After years of trying to find the perfect bushing lube for my Thumlers I think I may have just found it. Reese Teflon Trailer Ball Lube. It is a some what thick paste, no toxic, won't damage rubber and most plastics, and it stays where you put it. I've been using it for a month now and I have not had to re-lube those stupid white end bushings! (usually a weekly activity)!

The problem with high pressure grease is when it works, it works too well, it collects rock dust/dirt and you forget to clean the bushings out. Oiling helps wash this out, but is still no substitute for maintenance.
Changing over to sealed ball or roller bearings is the ultimate fix but it may not be worth it to you.

Interesting point. Wonder which is better~ a freely turning shaft that may collect gunk, or a shaft that stops turning after a week but remains realitivly gunk free? I guess the correct course here is to keep up with the routine maintence

Covington liberally packs their bushings with a white grease. I suppose it would depend on where you live. In the desert where I live the oil on my tumblers are coated with the ever moving real estate. I have to really flush bearings with oil before using. If you were in a relatively dust free area lithium grease or similar would work well providing you don't contaminate with grit.
