Good afternoon, I have a few cabochon pictures to share with you. The date on the penny is the year I graduated from High School in Albuquerque, NM. I have been told that this is Epidote I don't know what this is. The vendor where I bought this told me it was Emerald. I just took the rock and shaped and polished it to reveal the patterns in it. Thanks for looking....Bob

Really nice cabs Bob. Is the first one from Ted? If so, it is in fact Epidote, Quartz, and Markasite. Nice stuff to cab, isn't it?! Can't help with the I.D. on the emerald, but it's still pretty.

No, the epidote came from Ken (rockmanken). Thanks, Ken. Huge pictures reveal the mistakes. A critical review is most welcome.

I hate it when I don't get a good identity when I go to Black Market Minerals. They misidentified Girasol Opal as well. I haven't got to cutting it yet but it is really Smoky Quartz.
If Ken comes in here to view these maybe he can identify the second cab.

Nice cabs Bob. That last one is emerald it looks just like the emerald I got in a Mine-run 1 pound bag from ebay. I cabbed one piece and put it away because of all the fractures. I think I'll dig it up right now, it is pretty soft and is easy to cut.

I have a question for you all. That last one is a shape. Is it technically a cabochon?

I have a question for you all. That last one is a shape. Is it technically a cabochon? I believe it is Bob. Here's a snippet from wikipedia: "A cabochon or cabachon, from the Middle French caboche (head), is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted." So according to this definition, it is in fact a cabochon. Nate

No, the epidote came from Ken (rockmanken). Thanks, Ken. Huge pictures reveal the mistakes. A critical review is most welcome. These are very nice cabs bud. The last one is just beautiful, really like the color in that one. The only thing I would suggest is that you make the "girdle" or beveled edge slightly lower. I generally make mine from 2 to 3 mm. Bezel wire comes in different heights but Smiths like to buy wire in the shorter heights to save money and waste less silver. Dan
