I bought some pretty expensive slabs of hell's canyon while we were in Quartzsite. We came home and i found this in some piles of rocks tony left at our house last yr. do you think this is Hell's Canyon Pet. Wood? I know the pieces i bought were much lighter so I'm not sure. ty mary ann

You know wood is one of those things where ID's can be fairly difficult because the same species of wood with the same grain pattern, in the same color range, will look almost exactly the same even though from several different locations. Real pretty grain in that piece though....Mel

I have no idea what kind it is but having so much grain to it in such a pattern really makes it look sharp! Beautiful slab Maryann! Fran

It has the herringbone look but I think it's something different.

I would say that it is probably sequoia, which is the same species as Hells' Canyon wood, but to be able to say for sure it came from Hells Canyon is real hard to say. On the upside, it came from an estate that was very close in age and proximity to where the old rock hound buried his Hells Canyon wood, so there is a possiblity, but no definitive answer. I saw lots of sequoia specimens in Quartzsite from lots of different locales, so very hard to say. It is still cool none the less.
