Hi All,
Just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I'm an Aussie who's moving to Wisconsin to train as a goldsmith / jeweler. Lapidary is my hobby, which I also use to look for materials to work with in my jewelry.
I love rocks, and hope to find many opportunities to go out 'hounding' once I'm settled, so if anyone knows some good spots around that neck of the woods then I'd love to hear from you.
Cheers, Damon.

Yeah, pretty spoiled. I go rockhounding almost every week or 2, only about a hundred yards from my house.Walk down my driveway to the end of it where I have a large plastic tub.Usually a flat rater in it. ;D ;D

Hey Damon, welcome! Where in Wisconsin are you coming to? You're coming from Oz to the land of limestone! I think the only thing better in Wisconsin than Oz is we can own a firearm!
Take care, Nate

Hi Nate, I'll be in Stoughton, about 15 minutes south of Madison. You? Yes, your gun laws are very different to ours... Cheers, Damon.

Welcome Damon!
It'll be a bit of a drive for you, but there are a lot of good sites in the Michigan Upper Peninsula.

Thanks Tony and Chuck.
Can you be more specific about Michigan Chuck? I'm not adverse to a drive...
Damon.

I'm about 30 miles SW of Green Bay. Mostly limestone here. I have found a few pieces worth cabbing, but as far as jewelry grade, I'm not sure.
You may be close to finding some gravel bars on the Mississippi River or close to it which would have lake superior agates and some jaspers in it.
As far as the U.P., There's quite an array of stones to be found up there. I think it takes a lot of searching though. It would be probably between 4 and 6 hrs driving for you to get up there depending on where you're going.

Thanks for the tips Nate, I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
So you're near Appleton? I passed through there in December...
