Been admiring all the ingenuity of home made tumblers here... anyone ever make a tumbler from one of those home rotisserie ovens? or a BBQ rotisserie? Just curious.

you either direct drive the barrel rotation, or the roller rotation, or the motor turns a drive pulley that turns a driven pulley on the roller.
barrel should turn at about 40-60 RPM. typical rotisserie speed (3-8 RPM) does not work for either of the direct drives, and is way too slow for the belt.
but, you could get a surplus gear motor that went about 40RPM and build a unit. might not cost much more than a rotisserie motor if you get a good surplus deal

OK then rotisserie too slow... I have a motor with a gear box. currently has a tire attached for the barrel... someone's home made tumbler. Okie engineering . I think I want to convert it to some sort of shaft/pillow block arraingment for barrels. Will have to think about it for a bit. Mia

it is me. let me know if you want to chat about tumbler building project. I might have soem spare rollers and/or some old Lortone 6lb barrels. Can't decide what I want to do with them.
what is the RPM out of the gearbox? is it turning the barrel? or turning a roller that turns the barrel.
Making a 45-deg angle design like an open cement mixer has always made a lot of sense to me. Could be direct drive, or still use a belt like Covington model.

Hey Daniel, the gearbox turns the Tire directly, it's an old airplane tire, LOL. I dont know the speed. I will have to take some pics for you to see tomorrow. It's a crazy looking thing. I thing the motor would be better utilized turning a roller where one could have 2 or three small barrels going at once.

Hold on don't rule out the rotisserie. If it goes at 5 rpm and you put about a 50" pulley on the rotisserie and a 1" pulley on a 1" drive shaft on a 5" barrel it will go about 50rpm. Just picture this in your basement. ............................................................................. yeh ok maybe a different motor would be better. to be serious try a furnace motor. Usually heating/plumbing shops will let you pull a old one out of the scrap pile for free or next to it. Might even get some pulleys. Just make sure its not a air over motor or it will overheat. Generally the ones with a belt are what you want. I have made a couple of tumblers with these.

When I was in Quartzsite a rock hound wanted to sell me a home made tumbler he didn't use any more. I told him to bring it by and I would take a look at it. I loved it! I put three 5 gallon buckets of rough in it and turned it on and I only had it about 10% full. I put it up for sale, ( I was hoping to take it home with me), it sold the next day to a vendor. I did take a picture of the beast before it left though. It had a gear reduction motor and a chain for the drive I shoulda kept it! Tony
