I agree the slate is beautiful but I also really like the pattern in the Marble. Those are great slabs.

Hardness of the slate is 5 1/2 . The marble , which is quartz ,chlorite and epidote and some pyrite is 7.

Nice slabs Ted. I like the spongey ones lol. BTW, if anyone is interested, I cabbed some of this banded slate, and it was nice to work. here's a link to tthe pic of the cab if you care to look. I'd say it took a semi-gloss polish for me, and that was with AO polish, before I made my diamond pads. It may shine up better on diamond. i94.photobucket.com/albums/l100/green-villain/Cabs/bandedslatecab.jpgNate

I think semi-gloss is par for 5.5 MOHS material. Would be interesting to know if diamond did give better shine.
To bad the center orbs are not darker/bolder. That woudl have given a punch and balance to the cab that the fairly thin black bands do not manage to provide. Still, it is interesting to see it cut in the plane of the bands. SOmetimes I cut mahagony obsidian this way if I have a number of parallel layers. Once I got a bulls-eye effect on a cab and have been tryign to recreate that ever since.

Banded slate is a misnomer, this is argillite . Why did i call it banded slate ? without question you will be able to figure these out ;D . the hardness of rocks does not tell you . how it will polish . Softer rocks than this will polish much better, than it does . This argillite ;D polishes to a matte, but that is ok,just fine . This material is easy to work , and the patterns vary from specimen to specimen , although some are alike. depending on the angle you cut ,of course ey ! bullseyes can often be had . It is a great material . if you like the look . The Native Indians liked it ;D I like it too
