I am only so-so pleased with this. I was hoping for a little more color and better contrast onthe pattern. This rough came from thegemshop. I cut them between 3mm and 8mm to allow for a dublet and some different styles of pendant stones and cabs. Also got a 1.5" thick endcut left. Not sure whether to cut it or add it to the block collection I am planning ot sell. This stuff sheds a lot of sand!

I hand cut the 1st slab to get the orientation across the polyps. But the orange cloud running along the edge of each piece is a bit less appealing, and I had hoped for some bluish white agate based on what I saw on the outside of the rock. I think the smaller pieces are actually showing hte best. I have some slabs I paid a guy at the Salem show a good price for 3 years ago. I was hoping for somethng more like that (see below)

They may not be exactly what you wanted but they are beautiful and look like they will really work up well! Great job! Fran

yes, but I am glad I have thoses ones I bought as slabs because they are more solid and consistient. I will do something with these enw slabs I cut, even if it is trading them away.

Oh I don't know I think the coral shows up beautifully. They should still make beautiful cabs and it generally shines nicely. It's getting to be that time of year when light browns and beiges are in style.

what is the hardness of that Indonesian coral? our Florida coral is a 7 on the Mohs scale, if I can cook my coral at 450-500 and can change the color I wonder if it can do the same with that coral? If you have a turkey roaster, take the pan out and fill it with dry sand and put it to 200 with your sample slab in there and ramp it up to the highest setting 50 degrees every hour and hold it there for a day or 2 then ramp down and let cool. Wonder if it would change?

Heat will make it more redish. I have seen that. But I like the whiteish-blue in straw. I might try to heat some just as an experiment. I also wonder how it would fare in sugar-acid treatment, and maybe I have enought of these slabs to risk one. To be continued ...
