After debating for a bit, I did it! I printed out the membership form, wrote out the check and got it ready to mail tomorrow! Joining my first rock club! Woodyrock inspired me, and actually told me about, and invited me to a field trip to Saddle Mountain that he is hosting in April. 25lbs of pet wood I can collect per day plus one big one that can weigh more than 25lbs (if I can figure out how to find it ) He told me that newbie rockhounders would not be "left alone" and would be instructed on how to search. I'm pretty excited, we are doing the family membership but our first field trip will just be me and Patrick. I don't know that I could survive a whole weekend with four kids while trying to learn how to hound rocks.... (sorry kids but this is Mommy and Daddy time) Thanks Woody! Joining your club and will join the one close to me too at their next meeting this month! Kinda scary going to the next level. Science and History were my worst subjects in HS and College, who woudathunk I would become obsessed with them now??? Wish me luck! ~Krystee (Update on page 2, attended 1st meeting...wow)

Good luck on your learning adventure. The more you learn about geology (how and where rocks are formed) the better rockhound you will beocme. Who would think that those Chemistry classes that most of us slept through would come in handy one day.

No kidding Darryl!
Was putting everything in the envelope this morning and noticed the "other" print. Dues are from July to June each year. It says that dues paid in March are for the following year. AAGH!!! Going to call to see what I can do to get the membership immediately. I REALLY want to go on the field trip next month!

Check and see, usually a lot of clubs kind of let the membership start immediately, even though officially the payment is for the next year. I have joined clubs in November and althought the membership didnt offically start for the next year I could have went on fieldtrips etc.
I had the chance to visit the Skagit club , North of Seattle, back in 1994 when I was young. Real nice and friendly people !

You folks sure are lucky. It's a 3 hour drive to the nearest club in good weather. Hate to think how long it would take over snow and ice. So, until I can talk the wife into moving, I go clubless.

Krystee, that sounds awesome. I would love to be a member of a club but the only one near me is 1 hour away and my husband is just not into the rocks. This is my thing and the club meets in an area that isn't always safe for a lone woman. Oh well, I know you will enjoy the club. Keep us up to date.

Krystee,
Woody, Jack and I are in the same club, so it will be nice to meet you. You'll be sure to get some pet wood on that field trip. I still have a 250-pound pet wood piece in my rock saw that one of the guys found over there last year. It's rare to get pieces that big, but who knows? The Saddle Mt area is also an approved ORV site, so if you have an ORV, bring it along. Garry

Krystee once you join any rock club in the NW Federation you are welcome to any clubs field trips. Best to call before going to make sure it's not cancelled. www.amfed.org/nfms/There should be a 2011 NW field trips list at the Mount Hood Rock club show first weekend of april Lee

Rodney, Thanks! You were right it all worked out! Noticed where you're from, Patrick and I got married in Atlanta (Stone Mountain actually, on the Henry W. Grady riverboat) that was a fun city! Mike, Googled ammolite images. Geesh, I can see why that's your true love! Jake, That makes me sad . Tanya, Patrick isn't really that much into rocks either but he is starting to pick them up off the ground and say "what do you think about this one?" He does love camping though and repelling whether off of 65 story buildings, cliffs or into a cave. (He's a hi-rise window cleaner by trade - don't ask me to get on any ropes though :nono: ) Garry, Can't wait to meet you, Woody and Jack! I am REALLY excited! Have a few bugs to work out with the kids, haven't left them a whole weekend before but don't really know if I want to bring them either.... can't decide. I sent in my form and check. I read something about having to contact someone regarding insurance, need to do that. Also printed out the checklist for field trips. I have a few things that I need to purchase and prepare. Are you guys going to the meeting the night before? It's a ferry ride away but am thinking I should probably go to a meeting before showing up for a field trip??? A little lost here... ~Krystee

Charlie, (My note to you dissappeared ) Have you been to more than one meeting? Does it feel like a family thing where everyone "gets" you? There isn't a kid in the word that doesn't like pretty rocks but some of my friends just look at me and say, "Hmmmm, that's neat, what are you going to do with them now?" ;D Thanks, I'm pretty excited! ~Krystee

i have only been to one meeting but the folks there were down home people that i like. the oldest person there was a benedictine nun in her habit and she has a rock polisher and she had stones to display for others to see... when i told my sister about her, she said she knows her and she spent some time in tanzania. excellent because i know a few prayers in kswahili and i will hopefully surprise her in the next meeting, unless she passes on... she seemed in real good health last meeting. did all right at the rock show in kc. met dan and dan and dave and one of their wives. they were from arkansaw and lawrence, ks. i was glad i got to go there. charlie

Thanks Lee! I have poured over the NWFS website and WA State Mineral Council www.mineralcouncil.org/I also sent an email to East Kingco Rock Club to get some information because they are right down the street from me. They haven't responded to my email yet though. I will look into the Mt. Hood Rock club/show site. Not sure what the difference is between NWFS and WA State Mineral Council? The Kitsap club is members of both. East Kingco is just WA State Mineral (I think....). ~Krystee

Krystee:
Most women will look at your rocks, and have that 'what are you going to do with them look" . This all changes when you show them the polished cabochons you have made from the "rocks" . You could also hand these same women, or men a diamond crystal, and get the same look. A rough diamond crystal is pretty plain. Woody

Krystee, Don't worry about insurance. Our club has an umbrella policy for liability (in case one of our members damages someone else's property). As a member of KMGS you will be covered along with the rest of the members when you are on a club-sanctioned field trip. Keep in mind that the insurance doesn't cover anything that happens to you - just if a club member damages anothers property, then that person would be compensated (after the usual legal mumbo jumbo). What you could have read was that you would not be covered by our liability policy if you are not a member of our club. Hope to see you and the rest of your family at a future club meeting or on a field trip. Garry

Update: Went to my first club meeting tonight with East Kingco! Fantastic time! There are some amazing people there, UW Geology Professor, local Rock Shop owner and a curator for the Burke Museum to name a couple. My daughter went with me and fell in love with the juniors program. Tonight we learned about different ways to mount specimens. I stayed back to watch and chit chat with all my new friends but my daughter participated and picked out her stone and mounted it. I just can't believe the stuff this guy set out for kids and adults to mount for themselves. Look at the beauty Brooke picked out! Opalized quartz from Kalama Same guy that led the mounting specimens program (Bruce) came up to me and my daughter earlier and said "Here, have a rock!" smiled and walked away. A hunk of Mahogany Obsidian! Another super cool thing was after the meeting a couple of ladies came up and asked me how I learned to wire wrap the goldstone I was wearing. I told them it was from Randy's tutorial here at RTH and they asked me if I could send the link to them! It was such a cool night and now my daughter's hooked too! ~Krystee
