Abigail and I got to the "Fox Rocks" rock show at the Weis Earth Science museum in Menasha WI today. This is a smallish show, and there's not a lot of rough for sale, mainly jewelry and some fossils. I picked through the rough and found a few keepers.
First I dug through the old gent's bucket of slabs. Abigail and I each picked out 2, as they were 4 for $5.00 or $1.50 each.
I picked out the aventurine and the OJ, and Abigail took a piece of what I believe is banded iron from Michigan's U.P., and the turitella.
Then we dug through his "stuff" bucket lol. It was all 50 cents each, or 3 for $1.00. Well, gotta take 3 right?! The slab on the left (it's 1/2" thick) was labeled texas chert, but I'm wondering if it's wood?
The piece in the middle is a 1/2" thick slab of wood showing nice rings, and the piece on the right seems to be serpentine.
Then we saw the guy I bought my tumbler from- Leroy. He's there every year. I bought a piece of rainbow obsidian from him at $5.00 a lb. It was right at a pound, and was about fist size... Perfect!
I tried cutting a few slabs from this, but it's kept breaking off on me. I think my blade's whacked. I got a few one cab pieces from it, but the rest broke off too small. That's too bad, because it has some amazing colors. I cut about half of it, and will hopefully get the piece I have left face polished.
Then I won a silent auction. I got this huge (and heavy - holy crap ) piece of what they call banded iron. It's red jasper and iron? (maybe hematite) layered. I had gotten a small piece last fall at a different show, so I was glad to win this monster for $5.00. It's 6" x 8" x 3.5" thick. I bet it's near 20 lbs, and I thought it was gonna break my backpack straps LOL!
I also bought a little piece of kyanite for a dollar, too. I'm gonna try to cab that sucka. It'll probably end badly, but what the heck it's worth a try.
This isn't a huge show with really rare rocks to be bought, but I got to spend the afternoon with my daughter and find a few pieces to take home. It was a good day all around!
Thanks for looking,
Nate
