I set up as a vendor at a show for the very first time last weekend. I must say that I had a blast and am very please on how I did. The Stoddard Wells show is a true " tailgate". There are no vendor fees nothing to sign, just show up . It is like a mini Quartzsite. Held in the middle of the desert near Victoville, CA. I would say there was more than 60 vendors and a ton of people showed up. I had such a good experience there that I plan on making this show every year. Out in the desert My tables My friend John holding down the fort while I take pictures Thanks for looking

This was the 35th year this show has been held. The jars have Mexican Fire Opal and the one with the blue cap and the small one with dark material have Fire Agate Here is a panaramic view of all around I took the photos from about 1/3 of the way up this mountain All around This is the 35th year that this has been going on.

I used to live in Barstow (about 15 years ago) but I wasn't much into rocks back then unfortunately or I would have been going there. We went to Victorville to go the the "big city" since it was bigger than Barstow. I remember the long drive through the desert to get from Victorville from Barstow, sure looks the same. You had a great set up and had fun which is the most important thing.

When I lived in California, I never missed that show. It's a tailgater in the old tradition and wonderful things show up there at very fair prices. Compares very favorably to the Bakersfied tailgater, the old timey Quartzite before it was spoiled and the Snyder Rch Pow Wow. I really miss those shows. Texas is a fine place to live but the shows are pretty lame.....Mel

Those pictures are wonderful! I used to camp up in the mountains there as a kid. I think that is where my love of rocks started. I sure wish I still had the ones I would collect as a kid! Fran

There was an old mine that had a black jade with marcasite. It could be gold plated over the marcasite making a flashy black and gold rock. People had lots of stories about where it was, whether it had been filled in by BLM, etc. We went to the show every year to either camp and shop or sell. You would occasionally hear of people finding pieces. It used to be a weekend outing for both clubs we belonged to. I wanted to go this year but got tied up with grownup stuff.

Yep, that was a beautiful form of jade too but I never was able to find the dig . Supposed to be not far from the serpentized verde antique marble. Collected a lot of that a couple of times but never found the darn jade....Mel

I don't recall agates. You see small pieces of magnetite and hematite around the show area. The Verde Antique quarry and Tri-Color quarries are marble quarries. Both are very nice materials. Be on the watch for wild dogs in the area. Friends a few years ago were walking their dogs near the show and were surrounded by a pack of wild dogs. One of the dealers scared them off firing a pistol. Another friend (a couple of years before) scattered her fathers ashes on the back side (a little North of the Tri-Color quarry. Next time she went out there she drove into the area (to visit dad) her car was surrounded by a pack of barking wild dogs. She left dad to deal with them. We occasionally see wild dogs (feral would be more accurate). They either are abandoned or runaways or saw "Call Of The Wild" too many times. They can be dangerous since they don't fear people like coyotes. I'm an animal lover but keep a 12 Ga. by the front door.

Yeah, Stoddard is not really agate country but just 40 or so miles away, from Barstow east, it's wall to wall agate and jasper almost everywhere from Barstow to the Nevada border on both Hwy 15 and Hwy 40.....Mel

Fish - you just identified one of my long unknowns! Knew it was from California, knew it was fairly soft, but no one had an ID for me. Should I add fuel to the fire that I picked it up from a guy that I ALSO picked up a couple slabs of the black jade with marcasite (it's actually a dark green jade I think - there are a few places where the jade fades to a more recognizable "green" but the bulk of the slab looks black).
