Howdy Folks, Beautiful 80 degree day here in the hill country today, bluebonnets blooming and butterflies flitting about so I decided to make a trip down near Bandera to the gal's ranch that has her fathers old collection piled about. She's always a doll and very patient with me as I squirt every rock in the piles looking for new treasures. I'm getting better at spotting the palm now and scored some beautifull palm fiber, shrinkwood, agate, and even some rare pocket rot ( dino bone) wood. I got some dandy pet wood including some fine palm pieces for the tumbler too. Anyway here's the first few pics. Curt buddy, not much left in the way of large stuff and no big shrinkwood but I have a couple of unchipped ones that may pan out. I'll put them in the saw soon and see if they're any good....Mel Couple of colorful ten inch saw sized shrinkwoods: Raw dino bone wood. Thin this one will be colorful inside: Extremely pretty shrinkwood but only big enough for a couple small cabbing slices: Lot of small rare wood pieces in those piles, This is a palm fiber unlike any other I have: Gorgeous palm fiber of the usual variety: Brown palm fiber: And finally. some real bright colored Texas wood: I'll post more pics after my camera battery recharges.

Nice score Mel. That rare palm fiber looks like lizard skin.

Wow ! cool to know that Curt. Is snakewood an actual plant type name or is it a common name. like shrinkwood, assigned because of that scale like look of the vascular bundles?.....Mel

Mel Snakewood is a name given to it because of the snake skin look it has. It was actually a huge vine.

Snuffy: Found two more pieces of the Dino Bone wood today ( actually, correctly pocket rot wood according to Matt Dillon). One is only a tumbler but the other is really really nice. It has a tiny chip out showing the pattern and I'm thinking I might just tumble it as one big tumble instead of slabbing it first. I think I've posted pics of slabs of this stuff before. Cut a cab too. 'll try to find them and add them to this post. Curt: I Googled the snakewood and it was a very interesting read. Apparently most is found in Texas and Louisiana and the pics matched my example exactly. thanks for the info...Mel

Mel, I was wondering. I'm bound to have some in my piles. I'm just now getting around to cutting my wood after 2 years. snuffy
