Greetings from the soggy PNW, I keep ending up here after searching online so figured I'd join up and get some answers about my Highland Park E50 (rather than google hits about 50 year Whiskey ). Been hounding for a bit now (mostly OR beach agates and jaspers), and tumbling for over a year, but my wife bought me a nice solid old E50 from a local shop that needed some TLC. Disassembled it, had it media stripped, primmed and painted it up nice in a glossy "safety red" and it's now reassembled and on it's workbench but wouldn't ya know it, I failed to note what direction the wheels need to spin. So, I can't finalize the motor mounting until I get this small but rather important bit of info... any volunteers Anyway, seems like a lot of helpful folk hang out here, so I thought I'd join the "club". Shane... PS: Here's how the E50 looks after her paint and reassembly: lh5.googleusercontent.com/_oAJvFwixvZc/TXpTTBbSQQI/AAAAAAAADPM/iSSRoztUMww/s400/IMG_20110311_074939.jpg

Shane, welcome to Grey -blue or wet -dry. The unit you speak of is the High-land park, 8" cabb unit. i have the smaller one the E-10 bench model, the wheels turn down ward from the top. where on the lift you have a buff wheel the E-10 has a trim saw. looking from the lift end the unit turn clock wise. and by the looks of your unit i`d guess it to be a 1953 -59. looks like my 1953 unit. nice to here some one reconditioning a old cab unit. It well out last many newer ones my a life time easily. I put 8" diamond wheels on my E-10.

Hope you gave your wife a big kiss for buying that machine for you. They don't come much better than the old Highland Parks. Looking at the front of the machine, the wheels want to be moving down. If you run it the other way, you'll soon know it. You'll get a bath from the water flying up at you. And if you loose a rock, it may just hit you right between the eyes. Add to that, that by spinning the wrong way, the nuts that secure the wheels will loosen. Don

Nice job restoring. Like Don said units always turn toward the user. Most motors are easily reversible by switching a red and black lead that plug in in the terminal section. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks all for the info. I suspected I wanted it turning down from the top, but I get a bit paranoid about doing things right and just could not find a definitive answer.

by the looks of your unit i`d guess it to be a 1953 -59. looks like my 1953 unit. Speaking of manufacturing dates, do you know of any registries for HP serial numbers? I can still read the SN on mine and would be curious to look it up if such a registry existed.

Shane,
what i found out is Frantom And Contempo exchanged owner ship of highland-park the old line till 1972. when Diamond pacific. bought the lapidary wrights. 1955 was the change between Frantom - contempo. So i`m wrong on the date of my unit.
Serial No. 39693 ( E-10 )
Diamond pacific Ph. 1-800-253-2954.

Shane: Like other have already said, your wife did a very nice thing, and you have done a bang up job with the unit. I just wish mine looked so nice. You can see what mine looks like in the Members forum, page 3 "Another rock room" like many others, it now has diamond wheels.
