Decided to try something new...HA, that's me jumping all over the place again . I drilled a hole in one of my obsidian cabs. I decided to try the swirlies again. It actually worked ok. I threaded three square wires through the hole to work this piece. Still can't make the wires flow but at least I didn't cut them all off this time ! One of these days... I'll get there! ~Krystee

Krystee, Looks great to me..I like it. I'd say you got the wires to flow pretty well. Honestly, I like it so much, it looks like something I would do. Er, Something I might do ... Chris

Thanks everyone!
Gotta say, I really enjoyed the drilling! I did a bunch of practice holes on a very pitted slab that I had before trying the obsidian cab. Doing it this way uses a lot less wire so I can focus my practice on the bail and swirls, and if it doesn't work, it's not as big of a deal to start over.
One question for all of you experienced wrappers :help: .....
I noticed that the plating on the craft wire comes off very easily, just a few bends and it disappears. Is there a way to avoid that without having to buy the filled stuff? I'm not ready to throw away real gold yet... :nono:

You're doing good work, you should be using good wire. Did you make the ring too?

John,
I'm confused about what you mean by the ring? I don't know what that is? The entire piece was done by drilling a hole and threading three square wires through it. I pulled all the pieces up front and back, did the loop and bail and swirlies the way Randy's tutorial described... I just skipped the wire wrapping around the stone and did a shortcut with the drilled hole.

I'm new at wrapping and tried using the cheap wire and it kept on breaking after a few twist. I even tried a heavy gauge wire with better results but couldn't get the tight wrap. After using the 21 & 22 gauge wire square and half round my wraps were tighter and looked much cleaner. All my mistakes will be used for other projects or recycled. It might cost a little more but I seem to get better results. Besides gold & silver right now is a good investment. I think your work is really nice and deserves quality wire.

If you want to use the less expensive wire for practice Fire Mt gems sells some stuff they call jewelers bronze or nickel silver. It's the same color all the way through but it's round, they don't sell square and it's a bit stiffer than regular silver or gold filles wire, even though it's called dead soft. I've used some for working on groove wrapping techniques and it turns out ok.

Krystee, I think you did a great job. I believe the ring John is talking about is on your finger, not in the wrap. I love the way you used the 3 square wires through the hole. Works wonderfully.

What a great idea you've come up with! My only suggestion would be to make the bail hole a little bigger, chain clasps can be fairly large. I really like the look of this piece... nice work. Now go buy some good wire...

Now go buy some good wire... Yes, figured that out already when I tried to thread it. I ended up sticking it on a temp leather cord until I can redo it with better wire. Oh... and I'm on my way out the door right now to my local bead shop (cutest name ever - Garden of Beadin to buy some sterling!!! It's a little more expensive then Rio Grande but I've got some other pieces I want to redo and start as well. I'm just going to pick up about 10 feet or so until I get my Rio Grande order. Thanks everyone for your vote of confidence! I listened and I will try it out! ~Krystee

Looks great to me - and I generally hate swirlies, but yours don't take over the stone.
